The five hundred thousandth Škoda vehicle, manufactured in the city of Kvasiny, a subsidiary plant of the Mlada Boleslav-based Škoda Auto, is on its way to its new owner. The jubilee vehicle was a red Škoda Roomster, in the Scout version with a 1.9 TDi engine, manufactured to the order of French consumer.
”In mid 1974 the one hundred thousandth vehicle produced at the Kvasiny plant since 1945 left the gates. The one hundred thousandth Superb left the production line right here exactly a year ago, and today this production line will complete the five hundred thousandth Škoda vehicle produced in Kvasiny overall. The higher demand for the Roomster means that we recently increased this plant’s output and we expect this trend to continue in the future“, commented this landmark moment Horst Mühl, the member of Škoda Auto’s Board of Directors responsible for production and logistics.
The history of the Kvasiny plant dates back to the early 1920s when František Janeček, the owner of the JAWA motorbike plant purchased a part of the Solnice estate, which was made up of a sawmill, cooperage plant and a brickworks in Kvasiny. He converted these into bodywork plants, which produced bodywork for Jawa vehicles since 1934. During this period the plants, staffed by an average of 270 workers, produced about 3,700 vehicle bodies. The daily average reached four pieces, with seven to eight pieces produced during the time that the plants were producing vehicles for the army.
In 1947 an agreement was reached with the AZNP Mladá Boleslav plant on the production of Škoda vehicles in Kvasiny. The first Škoda Superb left the plant’s gates that very same year.
In time the Kvasiny plant began to promote itself as a producer of non-standard spare parts for bodywork and specialised versions of base models, particularly sports versions, but also produced utility versions. There was a fundamental increase in the plant’s floor area at the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s.
The Kvasiny plant produced such legendary Škoda models as the Felicia cabriolet, the 110 R coupe, the Garde and Rapid. Today the plant produces the compact family vehicle Roomster and the Superb, a luxurious saloon.
The Škoda Roomster was first shown to the public as a concept of a compact family vehicle at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production model was presented to the public at the 2006 Geneva International Motor Show on 28 February 2006. It has been on sale since mid 2006. The Roomster is Škoda Auto‘s fourth model series. So far more than 50,000 Roomsters have been delivered to the new owners.
