Hi Folks,

I am new here, about to buy a used A4 and need some expertise.

I am looking for an A4 and many within my budget are from 2005 to 2007. However, I am hearing that on these models there is a chance that one of the shafts (don't know which one) is prone to breaking and the repair bill is about £2500. Other vehicles prone to this are the A6 and Passatt from the same years.

Can any one give me any information on this?

many thanks,

Mark.

Welcome to VWAF

Avoid the 2.0 TDi in the A4, get a uber reliable 1.9tdi then remap it as it has a lot more potential if this is done.

Is the oil pump balance shaft which can go pear shaped along with injectors on certain engines.

Thank you very much for the quick reply to both of you. I have had several VW and an Audi A3 but they were all company vehicles and never knew about this problem until recently. So from what you are saying, it is only the 2.0 version that has the problem?

Once again, thanks.

Have a look here

Oil pump chain smashed thru alloy case and discussion on replacement oil pump conversion kit for BLB engine (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=112278)

Piezo Injector Failure, and subsequent detection and repair. (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=89459)

I think the general concensus is to get a later car (07 plate) to be less at risk but some are still affected.

Mine is a 57 plate, I decided to have the oil pump balancer shaft/hex drive key swapped out with a remanufactured one for peace of mind
Top hex drive key is new longer 100mm key, middle is my old one and the bottom from an 06 Passat

Hell of a lot cheaper than the dealer prices

Buy a B6 or B7 1.9 TDI as Jon says, not much to go wrong with those engines.

It seems that would be the best to go for, I called in at the Manchester Audi dealer and had a chat with them, it seems it is the balance shaft that sometimes goes. Thanks to all who have been helpful in answering my question.
