I am looking to buy a Fabia to use as a second car but need some advice please. It will only be used once maybe twice a week for short journeys so only looking at 1.2 engine. Looking to spend around £2500. What is the fuel economy, tax insurance etc? Any advice on what to look for or any particular spec to look for/avoid?

Cheers

No offence like, but if it's only being used once or twice for short journeys, would it not make better financial sense to get the bus?

Both good ideas, my journey is 10 miles each way and not always at times when bus is available. I commute on a motorcycle but at half two in the morning when i am called into work a car is the better option and the bus is not an option.

It's a car I'm also looking at buying for the Mrs. Her being Czech and all ....supposedly very reliable and economical. Bog standard 1.2 but the newer shape. Will spend around 3.5k for 57/08 plate.

personally i would go for a diesel, a bullet proof 1.9. quick, economical and reliable. an early one with no dpf to worry about. post 2001 though so its in the cheaper tax bracket. if you want lower costs then look at a 1.4 diesel in a lupo which is 30 quid a year.
