You'll need a fault code scan done for both things.

Sounds like a dodgy connection, check the 32 pin connector is latched in properly in the rear of the speedo 1st, then look at other reasons.

iv checked the connection in the back of it and thats fine
does any1 know if there is a relay for the instrument cluster or will i need to get a whole new cluster?

Only thing that would turn it on & off would be ignition, if its a dodgy barrel, I would get it properly diagnostically checked, when the cluster goes of, does the engine still continue running ok?

If needs a replacement cluster, we may have 1 available.

yeah the engine still runs fine, its just the instrument cluster and radio goes off together then comes back on again?

The radio goes of aswell, as in the display goes completely of, no lights nothing?

If so then I'm still thinking ignition barrel related tbh.

Anything else light up or go of at same time?

Yes the radio goes off at the same time then iv gotta put code back in.
All the lights on display go off so do the auto window button lights and the cig lighter light goes off too.
Then all comes back 5seconds later.

I cant be 100% over the net, but if all of that is happening, for me it suggests power resetting, so ignition would be my 1st look at diagnostically, but the fact the radio needs a code again is very weird, so it could be the cluster as radio should remember the vin no & not require the code.

What year & engine is this?

Its a 2003 facelift model and its a 2.0 tdi.

No such thing as a facelift model 2003, that's the original release of the 8P chassis.

Can you show us a pic of your car or the shape by way of online pics etc to confirm please.

Exactly the same as this.

That's not a facelift, but it is an 8P, maybe you just mean the newer A3 released in 03.

Ok well, given the age, it could be ignition related or even the cluster, may even be wiring, it needs vcds on it to look closer & see if the fault can be replicated with some wire moving, key movements etc.

Also another thing could be the grounding terminal in the engine bay if its got corroded, could momentarily be losing conductivity, but again then the engine would most likely shut down, unless its a split second loss of power, that's not slow enough for everything to shut down.
