Managed to get a tow 50 miles home from Tewkesbury yesterday where, on a busy M5 roundabout, I put my foot on the clutch and it went to the floor without any resistance and failed to disengage... It has completely failed. How deep in the dwang am I? I love my 150,000 mile 11ish year old workhorse even though she smells a bit and hope she's worth repairing.... any advice appreciated

depends on whats gone wrong
1 clutch master pedal cylinder fail £40 parts 1.5 hrs labour
2 clutch slave cylinder fail if its a concentric slave in gearbox then £45 parts 5.5hrs to do but would do clutch/flywheel as well £150 for clutch kit if its 5 speed the cylinder outside and about £40 for part 1.0hrs labour
check for fluid leak at gearbox bellhousing by engine if ok then it is probably master cyl

Is it a PD or VP engine? When was the clutch changed? Check for fluid leaks first but IMO it's due a new clutch

Dunno. Pardon the ignorance but What does that mean? Not aware of any clutch work done to date. Do you think it's worthwhile? Just got a miraculous MOT - emissions not so good and suspension rubbers all a bit baggy...

A VP engine has a pump, it's the older type engine, a PD is a pump nozzle engine and hasn't got a pump. The PD is more likely to have a DMF or dual mass flywheel which is dearer. At those miles it's got a lot of life left in it. You need a scan with VCDS to find out any faults and rectify them. Suspension parts are same as Golf, Toledo and A3 and are cheap and wonderful. I'd say if the body is straight she's a keeper

Thank you, the bearer of Good News. I think it has a pump - injector pump - and a VCDS sounds important/exciting. That would be by a dealership I guess, rather than by my darling mechanic round the corner.
Thanks many many :D

Thankfully VCDS is commonly available, even the dealers use it as it's easier than their system. There's members of this site that will scan your car for pennies VWAF User Location Map - VCDS - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=209563024277134815192.0004c505be14b22419dbe)

No sign of fluid leaks ... AND when I lifted up the pedal this morning it had pressure!!! But doubt it'll last, probably just being towed for 70 miles with the engine idling.... I reckon we're going for both cylinders, ouch, but then we'll be like new. About the VCDS - can I find some more info on that anywhere? My technological knowledge stopped with motherhood and the sale of my Renault 4 and XT500 .... 18 years ago, in Africa!!!! Hence not very clever on modern machinery.
