View Full Version : 19" RS4 Alloys - Proud of Tyre Wall - Falcon FK452

Hi,

I have a 58 Plate A4 S-Line with Audi Genuine 19" RS4 Alloys (part number 8K0 601 025AA).

The tyres that are on are Falken FK452, 255/35 R19 96Y.

The alloys sit slightly proud of the tyre wall and the alloys are taking a real bashing from the curbs during parking etc. See picture

I have looked at other A4's with the same alloys in car parks and they seem OK.

Does anyone else have this issue with Falken's or other brands?

Any advice on which brands would be best, the intention is to get new tyres and get the alloys refurbished.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hey there, I have the same trye size 255 x 35 x 19 and used to run Continental CS3's that very very similar.

I'm now on Barum Bravuris 2's, a good mid range tyre but again very similar in sidewall protection, or lack of.........probably around 2mm of sidewall protection if that.

You could always try typing in 255 x 35 x 19 rim protection and see what pops up?
Ask at any tyre fitting specialist and see what they have to say, but I don't think there's a lot on offer.

Personally, I'm always just really really careful with mine, I had a very slight scratch fairly recently on one rim, the others weren't too bad but I got them all refurbed again anwyay............The trick is to just stay away from kerbs!!!!

I know it sounds sarcastic, not meant to be, honest. I also know its sometimes easier said than done but itsworth the extra time n effort as scratched up rims do nothing for the look of the car.

Sorry I can't help more....

I'm looking at these for my next purchase ZZ5 | Avon Tyres (http://www.avontyres.com/car/zz5) they are a reasonable price and have "Functional rim flange protectors" as they call it..

The yellow ones look amazing;)

I just posted as a solution to the OP's problem, didn't say it was gonna be pretty.
I just try to avoid the kerbs

I just try to avoid the kerbs - Funnily enough thats EXACTLY what I try to do too, I find its the easist way to avoid the "kerbing" marks

There is a good point about tyres with rim protection though and one I'd rather have than not.
I remember having some tyres ( can't remember which ) on my 17's and the rim protection was amazing, probably around 7mm or so I'd say, and offered a little help if you did get to close sometimes.

Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look at those Avon ZZ5's.

I'm not expecting great rim protection from any tyres, just v low speed when parking. The problem with my current Falcons is that the alloy wheel sits proud of the tyre wall so there is no protection at all! I've had 19" alloys on a 3 series coupe and they had really good rim protection, think they were conti tyres.

I had seen the alloy gators but I think that would ruin the look of the alloys.

As you say the best policy is to avoid kerbs, unfortunately not everyone who drives my car agrees!! (not naming anyone!)

My new A4 came with Continental CS3's and they seem to have a reasonable overhang...

Apologies for the dirty wheels, it's hard to keep them clean when you do 800 miles a week.... :Blush2:

I have the exact same wheels and love them!

The first image is off my Bridgestone Potenza's on the rear,

Second image is of my Goodyear Eagle F1's Asymmetric 2's

Both have sufficient rim protection for my liking, if I had to choose one I would probably say the Goodyears have slightly more than the Bridgestones but theirs very little difference. I'm in the same boat as AGW82 rims are not as clean as I'd like them at the moment lol. I'm not sure if it's true but someone once told me that most premium tyres have rim protectors.
