Just to get this started, our car has been shown as in transit for a couple of days now, not sure how long it takes but the excitement is building again.
We have used winter wheels and tyres for quite a few years now, so I'm not really interested in a debate on should I or shouldn't I ... We know the difference. What I'd like to ask is where are folks buying their rims? Our car is coming on 17" rims and I'd like to buy a set of 16" alloys. There are many advertisers on the web, but I've bought rubbish wheels in the past and would like to avoid that this time around if possible.
We had Michelin Alpins on our last car for several winters, which were really good, but when they needed replacing we went for Goodyear Blizzaks, Which in my opinion were better than the Michelins. On our second car I just happened on a set of wheels complete with new Nankangs at the right price and they were brilliant, even though they do not get great reviews!
This time I'd like to try Nokians or perhaps .... Name escapes me just now, sorry. Looking forward to see what others are planning for next winter. Tia sorry about spelling the names wrong.

Verdestein Wintracs was the other tyre I'd thought of trying. Tia

I wonder when this would start! Beats last year! ;)

I have winters for my A3 - 205/55/16 to keep the rolling radius of my 225/45/17 summers.

I have Continential Winter Sport 3D on all 4, bought part worn with 6.5mm tread left all round and after 10k-ish miles, they were showing just below 6mm so excellent wear rate.

They provided excellent grip on the ice and not once did I get stuck in the snow. Braking was unreal, no skidding, just total grip (with the help of the ABS).

This was the first time I ever had winter tyres and will be buying them for my A6 pretty soon, should be unreal with quattro also.

I've been using Vredestein Snowtrac 3's on my Golf during the winter/s.

Can recommend them totally for all the normal winter tyre advantages.
So far 19k miles use with 5mm left on the fronts & 7mm on rears.

Will replace fronts with same again at 4mm.

I have bought a new set from mrwintertyres 17s with Goodyear 8s which came second in the 2013 Autoexpress winter tyre test. The wheels are lightweight made in Germany and TUV approved for Golfs - did not want to risk heavy/soft Far East wheels for my new pride and joy. LINKY:-

Thankyou I hadn't found that site, I've just placed an order for a set of 16" rims with the Goodyear 8's as well.

I went for the 5-spoke Borbet 16" alloys with Conti TS850s from MrWinterTyres - great prices.

Not sure what they're like on delivery? Told me mine would be sent out Monday with a 2 day delivery, so here's hoping!

I'm guessing my location may take a tad longer, although it shouldn't - depends upon which carrier they use - anyone know?

DW58 looks like it's just you and me... As the saying goes "three wheels on my wagon" one of mine got separated, hoping it arrives tomorrow!

That's a bit strange - shame they didn't tie them together, mine arrived yesterday afternoon, well packaged. I'll be coating the wheels with G|Techniq C5 sealant over the weekend and G|Techniq T1 tyre treatment over the weekend in preparation for collecting the new toy on Wednesday 20th.

Hope the other wheel turns up PDQ and you don't end up in the cave waiting for the Cherokees to go galloping by ... ... ... yes, I'm old enough to remember that one as a favourite on Saturday mornings with Ed Stewpot.

thanks DW, fourth one turned up today, yes they came well packaged. I'm very happy with the look of the rims in real life! lets hope they can stick the rough and tumble of the winter roads. Ill probably will fit ours this weekend, its giving the weather to take a turn to the wintery side with some snow forecast on high ground.
Ill wish you good health and good luck with the new motor now, incase id forget later.
cheers

new wheels fitted on the car this morning, not as sporty as the those coming off, but more practical for the colder, wetter months ahead!

As the forecast is for a significant drop in temperatures I have just put my new Winters on so better grip and my Austins wont suffer from salt and potential slide damage.

Just an update on the Goodyear £50 Tesco voucher offer - as above I ordered my wheels with Goodyear Ultra 8s so qualified for the £50 Tesco petrol offer.

The Tesco vouchers arrived today approx 5 weeks from sending off the form you get with the wheels/tyres, arrived as 5 x £10 standard Tesco Gift Cards (by recorded delivery so need to be signed for) so can be used for any Tesco purchase not just petrol/diesel - so if you want to spend them on petrol best keep them out of sight of SWMBO

did you send a copy of your receipt? I was just about to fill my form in and wondered about that bit! tnx

Yes If I remember correctly that is a condition of the offer so you can prove the purchase. I believe they also contact mrwinterwheels to confirm the number of tyres purchased, 2 = £25, 4 = £50.

washed the car this morning and find the wheels very easy to wash… they appear to have something on them which really works. We are well pleased so far!

Quick question, do you think the 16" wheels would look ok on a 2.0tdi GT? With tyres they are £300 less than the 17" wheels which is a decent saving but not if they look naff or won't work for some technical reason

The 16'' wheels certainly aren't as sporty looking and may look naff depending on your own point of view! Our car is the 2.0l GT and we are more than happy with the wheels, safety and our own welfare comes in first over ''looks''… mind you, I would be the first to pick the 17'' wheels if it was down to looks alone.
Cheers

As higher and narrower tires are better, we went with 195/65-15 winter tres on our GT TDI 2.0 DSG
