Just bought my fathers 2009 A4 TDi Avant and found this in the gloxbox:

20677

(he doesn't know where it came from either!)

It's got the part number 8E0 837 393 A printed on it and it's made of soft rubber. There are two slots in the rubber on opposite sides as if something (like window glass) slides into it.

Any ideas?

Seems like you're not the only one. :D
Was isch des? : Audi A4 8E & 8H (http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/was-isch-des-t1812018.html)

A quick google throws up this:
URO Parts 8E0 837 462C Front Right Window Regulator : Amazon.com : Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/URO-8E0-837-462C-Regulator/dp/B0066TPP86)

The suffix is different but is suggests its a bit off a window regulator.

It's the battery cover off a portable death ray

Thanks, It does look a bit like the part that's wrapped around the window lifter cable in the amazon listing, also fit's with my thought that it has glass slots in it.

Interesting that the user on that german forum also found it lying in the car, maybe it's a in-transit part that's supposed to be removed by the dealer?

All the windows go up and down smoothly so hopefully it's not needed!

Are you sure the window hasn't been popped at some point?

I'll check with my father.

I have noticed that when the windows are rolled down, particularly both the rears, they start with a hell of a clunk and then they're smooth until fully down.

If the car is an 8E model it is a 2008 and if it is an 8K then it is a 2009 and either way that is part of the window aperture seal on the door trim from an 8E but the number is not good so it must be a moulding number as opposed to a part number.
