Hi,

my ABS light is coming on every now and then and after a scan i`ve traced the issue back to the ABS module. I`ve found a replacement with the same part number so my question is will a replacement module work?

Hi, I had this problem on my 2.5 tdi about 50 k ago (now on 202500 !) . The consensus was that the fault could be either the pump itself or the module and its a process of elimination to find which. For this reason OAC's (official Audi Centres) tend to replace it as a unit, mega expensive. Don't panic; I sourced a company reconditioning pump/module units at a fraction of the cost and had my local Audi specialist (not OAC) fit it. If you want to go this route I can dig out the info from my cars history file.

Hi phil,

the fault code the scan returned suggests the module rather than the pump so hopefully that`s the case! i have found another module with exactly the same part number - now i just need to find out if i will need to recode it or not . . . as for fitting if it`s just the module i`ll have a go myself. If it turns out the pump is playing up i will thake you up on the kind offer to dig the details out :D

update:

i`ve found a good guaranteed or your money back ABS module which is on its way as i type with exactly the same part number. After i fit it i will update any issues that cropped up, weather i needed to recode it etc - hopefully the info will be of use to someone!

You need VCDS to store the coding and transfer it to the new module else it won't work

Update:

i fitted the replacement module over the weekend and can confirm for my car at least (1998 A4 Avant 1.8 petrol (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004J63RIS/)) the replacement module with exactly the same part number did work straight away without any need to recode. So for a total outlay of £45 i managed to fix the problem myself (£20 lead for VCDS and £25 delivered for the ABS module) and i have the lead and VCDS lite for future use. The only thing i would say is make sure you have the correct star screw bits and ideally a right angle screw driver attachment or a very short screw driver to get at the screws!

Good work. Some of these 'scary' jobs are well within DIY capabilities.
MAF sensor for example, 10 mins to fit, £100 part from Audi....completely transformed the car!!

Unfortunately my noisy power steering might be indicating a rack problem which from what I've read is at the other end of the scale :-(
