Hello everyone. I have a bit of a problem with my 56reg 3.0TDI q7. Basically, the motor revs up but there is no power whatsoever. I have a car-wizard handy in my family and he had quickly diagnosed that my turbocharger is way 'too stiff' to operate, and sometimes doesn't move at all (which was confirmed by a vag scan). Now, he can do the 'cleaning out' of the turbocharger himself (he's done it in the past in the garage he used to work) so hopefully no probs on this side. The problem we have is sourcing the right seals and gaskets that will be required after removal from the motor. Could anyone confirm that I need at least two seals/gaskets (one on the exhaust side and one on the air-intake side) and if that's the case, what exactly to buy and where, please? We are planning 'the surgery' for the next weekend so I have a week to get them. Any help is highly appreciated.

Ideally you need a scan with diagnostic equipment such as vcds
Engine number would be handy to have.

Wow! That's a quick reply :). Thank you for the welcome. I was a long time lurker/reader but couldn't contribute more than there is already here. Here is the part of VCDS scan: Address 01: Engine Labels: Redir Fail!

That indicates a controller failure rather than turbo failure.
19804/P3348/013128 - Control Circuit for Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724): Electrical Malfunction
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
Possible Causes
Fuse(s) faulty
Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724) faulty
Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Fuse(s)
Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724)
Check/Replace Controller for Turbocharger 1 (J724)
Perform (Selective) Output Test, the Vane Positions should change visibly and audibly
Perform System Test using VAS 6395
Special Notes
When stored in the 3.0l TDI (ASB/BKS/BMK/BNG) with throttle body faults P106B/004203 and/or 17988/P1580/005504 check the throttle unit and wiring for issues that may be falsely causing the turbocharger fault. This note is in reference to customer feedback, not official TSB or TPI documentation.

Yes. We've checked these already (as much as possible). But then my guy took of the shaft that drives the 'flaps' in the charger and tried moving it 'manually'. According to him it should move effortlessly. Unfortunately that's not the case. Frankly, he had already managed to repair the steering rack and pretty much everything else that my Q7 threw at him so I see no reason not to trust him (he's my cousin too :-) ).
But nevertheless thank you for your input :-)

Fair enough.
Just thinking of checking easy things before stripping the turbo.
Are these 3.0TDi's not bi turbo?

single turbo ;)

Now, thats a good question. I suppose I'd better give him a ring and as the same question. Although I do believe he would have known that alrewdy. Perhaps somebody else here might know better...
BTW, I am not a car mechanic but as far as I can tell there is only one air filter and there's only one fat tube going from it to the turbocharger. So I guess its just one?

This link is for the turbo on the q7 3.0 tdi.
I would recommend ensuring this is your turbo first. ;)

Thanks for that. I'll ask my guy first.
As I said earlier, I'm a complete noob when it comes to things like that :-D

Right, I just heard from my guy and he says he'd checked with his 'better informed' mates. Apparently the seals/gaskets I was asking about are all metal so there should be no issues refitting them (with some appropriate sealant obviously). But he says we will need to do the 'adaptation procedure'? Well, this will be the first one for me ( I do have the VCDS and cable and apparently this is all I need) but some sort of procedure would be nice:1zhelp: . So, if anyone could shed some light that would be highly appreciated. Also this might help somebody in the future having similar issues. On the separate note, I will try to take some photos while the 'surgery' is undertaken and will post them here for all to benefit, hopefully. :)

Did you get this fixed without replacing the turbo?
I new here too and have a very similar problem on a 54plate A6 3.0 Tdi quattro.

Hi there. I ended up replacing the turbocharger as a whole. It turned out that the turbine spindle had a worn out bearing which in turn caused it to malfunction. Also, the actuator arm was very, very stiff so the controlling motor had a very hard job operating it. It was pricey but I didn't want to risk going on holiday and having the 'limp mode' engaged on the German autobahn :). That would be a disaster. Basically. It turned out to be a purely mechanical failure of the turbo. All electronics controlling it were fine. Have yours examined by someone who knows their stuff and they might be able to diagnose it for you properly. Good luck

Ouch! Bet that was painful on the wallet! I posted my details on the A6 C6 forum to see if anyone can shed light as there are two faults showing for the turbo. Loved taking my car to Germany too!
