Hi, well after months of looking for an A4, initially looking for 2.0tdi 170 still no luck. I have been thinking as i only do between 8,000 to 10,0000 miles a year should i really be looking at getting a petrol rather than a diesel?
Are the 2.0 tfsi engines any good? are there any issues to be aware of with these?

Gotta be petrol. The 2.0TFSI is a really strong engine often delivering a chunk more than 211bhp from stock. Remaps have been know to show over 300. Work out the annual cost difference in fuel and I'm sure you'll see it makes sense ;)

For your mileage I would say go for the petrol aswell, but if its alot of motorway miles then the diesel might work out cheaper. Go for the petrol anyway. I'm pretty sure you will enjoy it alot more.

I have the 2T (in quattro Avant form). The engine is lovely, good enough grunt, with plenty of revs to play with. Easy to get 90mph out of third without red-lining.
Due to the alloy block, even in winter, engine temp is at operating temp within a couple of mins.
I bought it when I had a company fuel card so didn't really matter whether I did 5 or 50 mpg, so paying the £5k extra for the 3TDI seemed a bit pointless.
It has only just started to loosen up a bit after 30+k miles. Prior to that I was (very) lucky to get 30mpg on a motorway run, even at 60-70mph, it is now doing closer to 40-42mpg if I cruise control at 60mph on a long run.
There is also the oil issue. Audi say 1 litre/1000 miles is acceptable. I have gone through about 25 litres in 32k.
If I did lower mileage I would hang on to despite the niggles, but as I need a bit more mpg it will be swapped for a 3TDI in September.
Torque is nice, but revs is more fun;)

Thanks everyone for your replies...the more i think about it i am considering petrol. I'm also considering VW passat cc more spec for the money.

Diesel everytime!! Watch out for high oil usage from the petrols!!

The cost of changing car is covered by the increase in mpg? That'd be a first !

Well kind of an excuse for me to get a more powerful car yet still deliver sensible-ish mpg. I though I had a pretty good deal on the 2.0T, but the 3.0TDI S-tronic Quattro with sports diff is £25/month cheaper than I'm paying at moment , so yes, the cost of car is more than covered :D
