An old acquaintance came to visit a couple of months ago and I couldn't help notice that this beautiful car needed to be restored back to a worthy condition. The owner knew it had to be better for the next track day at Knockhill.

The effects of dry-wiping of the paint and general poor wash technique turned the car into the condition that you see here.

Wash and Clay
Foamed with Megs All Purpose Cleaner through superspray.
Megs APC foamed through Superspray
Rinsed with hose
Autobrite tar and glue remover applied to lower panels.
APC'd again, followed by Two Bucket Method wash with Megs Lambswool and MF mits, CG Extreme Body Wash and Wax.
Rinsed with hose.

Claying carried out using Sonus green with Megs Last Touch as lube 1:1.
The car had been clayed a few months ago and was relatively free of majorly-bonded contaminants.

Machine Polishing
Sonus White Polishing pad used in conjunction with Menzerna 106 FF polish
Spread for 2 passes at speed 2. Polish broken down with 4 passes at speed 4-5, followed by 2 passes at speed 3. Residue wiped with Poorboys work towels.
The doors, all of the rear end, and the bonnet all required two hits.
All PCing carried out with only touch pressure on each panel.

Most panels required two hits.

Cleansing and Protection
Body was HD Cleansed followed by Carbon wax, Field Glaze.
Wheels cleansed with JEFFS Acrylic Prime and topped with Acrylic Jett (3 coats).
All windows, inside and out, were cleansed and protected with JEFFS ACrylic Prime.
Arches and tyres dressed with Poorboys Bold and Bright.
Tailpipes given a 10 minute hand polish with Megs NXT Polysh.
Door shuts and jambs cleansed with Megs APC 4:1, followed by Jeffs Prime again for more cleansing and protection.

top job.....

Need to get my car looking like that agian.. It used to have a really deep shine, but a lot of motorway miles, and half hearted hand washes means it's faded...

I'll have to do it properly before winter sets in.

Thanks for the comments chaps. Much appreciated. Delicate work on this car with its soft Jap paint. Give me hard German clearcoats any day! I will never buy a Japanese car because of the soft paint - too easy to marr.

Thanks Mark. Good to have you guys on board matey:p.

Will be back soon for some more SSF.

If you hope to do it just the once it might be easier to pay someone with the tools and materials to do it for you.

Then learn how to look after the revived paint finish :D

Don't expect valeting places or garages to be doing this work. They're not really interested in the time aspects of it. Also, if they dropped a clay bar onto the ground, they would probably pick it up and start using it again. I know I'm generalising here and I don't mean to be disrespectful but they do what they do to cater for a certain car owner.

You can wash and clay yourself and then cleanse and apply a nice wax or sealant. It will give you a great finish especially the claying. It takes off a fair bit of contamination that washing just cannot touch.

If your car's badly swirled then yes I'd recommend getting it de-swirled. Some chemicals can provide a transient masking of swirls but only if they're minor swirls really. Best get them removed and then focus on a safe washing technique.

I don't know where you're from, but there will probably be someone in your shire that could get the car into tip-top condition if you are serious about the show circuit. I've been to a few shows now and to be honest, 99.99% of cars I see do not have a great paint condition at all. And many of the owners are there rubbing their cars like mad without lubricating the surface or investing in proper cloths etc. So, I'm sure if you got swirl-removal done you would wind trophies at every show you entered.

A good place to start to get into the fineries of real car care is:

Hope this helps.

Amazing transformation.

Is a machine polisher the only way to get rid of the swirls, or can it be done by hand and ordinary wax/T-Cut?

How much would something like this cost, roughly?

Top job John......stunning transformation.

After the few phone calls we've had recently I really need to take the time n effort to get into see you to check out my A6.....Then make the time to get it done.
I'll leave it up to you if you wanna give the guys an idea on price, but just for the record, I don't know how many people actually know the time element involved in this?
From when we spoke some time ago it was " for deswirling to that degree " pretty much a 2 day job, although I believe you now have a colleague and it can now be done in a day.....albeit a long day.

Keep up the great work John...

All the best

Jim
