I recently bought a bora 1.9tdi 130bhp 2002.

I want to service it and can't work out if it is a pd or not. The log book doesn't mention it, however I was informed all boras after x reg are pd. Is this correct.

Can you work it out from the engine number - which is - ASZ 176446

My car has done 110k miles. Whats the best oil to use.

AbuAbida,

1) The 130 BHP engine suggests that this is a PD engine (Pumpe Düse) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumpe-duse). However, the engine code ASZ confirms that it is a 131BHP/96KW PD engine.

2) PD TDi engines use cam high pressured unit injectors, hence are very hard on the engine oil. Consequently, PD engines are not very forgiving if you use the wrong engine oil.

I only have experience with VE TDi engines, so won't suggest which oil to use.

However, it is imperative that you only use PD engine oil. The type of oil will depend on whether you are on a fixed service interval or a long/variable service interval.

Personally, I would recommend contacting a VW dealer and purchasing oil from them.

Otherwise you could contact the oilman, or wait for other members to chime in ...

The link below relates to the TDIClub website, which is predominantly US/Canadian based. This thread provides some good background on engine oil, but I'm not sure how much is relevant to Engine Oil on UK/Euro cars.

ASZ IS a PD engine. :) I have one running in my car.

Best oil on regular 10k service intervals is 505.01 5w 40. I use Millers XFE-PD oil in mine. It's damn good, and I run good power so would not scrimp on cheap oil. This stuff is 505.01 vag approved as well.

does it make a difference to use semi synthetic or synthetic. I hear you should use semi synthetic on cars with high mileage.

As far as I know you have to use fully synthetic oil only and one that meets the VW 505.01 standard. Anything else will not be suitable for your engine.
