A4 Alarm Problem

I have a late 1999 A4 1.9TDI saloon that has just developed a fault with the alarm in the boot compartment. Went to start the car and the alarm started making an intermittent beeping noise. The car starts and runs fine, i have unplugged the alarm and done a few miles but when i plug it back in the beeping is still there.

What is this alarm for ?

I would be greatful of any possible or probable causes.
