My Polo has got a new and interesting problem (adding to the list!). The coolant temperature is never getting up to 90, even after long journeys on the motorway. At first I thought it was a sensor issue, but I've noticed that when the temp drops (going down long hills and coasting) the temperature of the air coming out the vents drops. I wonder if there is a valve that directs coolant into the radiator and it's stuck open? I suppose it's better that the cooling system has failed in max-cooling rather than no cooling! It's a 2002 9n with the 1.2 12v 65PS engine. This is just one of many problems- the car needs a new steering rack, the gearbox linkage is going, there's an oil leak, and it needs new shocks. I'm not sure it's worth keeping TBH!

Sounds like the stat has failed open.

That's what I thought. Any way of testing the theory? I don't know enough about these sorts of things!

Try blocking half the rad with cardboard and taking a drive

I'll give it a go, thanks! Any idea how hard and/or expensive a replacement thermostat would be?

Shouldn't be hard or expensive but I have no personal experience of changing one.
