Hi, I have a A6 2002 3.0 petrol.

I have a misfire and need the code reading.

Are there any members out there in Manchester area with the VAG tool to do it. I know there are is VAG equipment available but I don't want to go down that road.

If you have a spare hour please PM your mobile and I will give you a call. I will bring car to you.

Rgds

Ok, here's the news. I took my car in to garage for a scan yesterday.

The 2 codes it revealed were 0300 and 0303 which according to the guy there is combustion fail on cylinder 6

I have ordered a new coil and will fit it soon.

If all is well will the engine maagement light then go out?

Hi, I may have made a typo error. He definitely said it was cylinder 6 and indentified it as being the rear most cylinder on the right hand bank. The code could be P0306 but I will check my notes when I get home today.
I am hoping it is just the coil that is at fault.

FYI Doctle, the guy at garage used a type of laptop which was connected under the dash somewhere. He also looked in the boot area for another number, but I don't know what.

I know very little about these types of scanners and diagnostics too. Could you recommend a suitable device that I could buy cheaply that would just read the fault codes. I don't want to be spending £35 every time I take it in.

I have looked on Fleabay and I am aware of the rules of this forum regarding dodgy/pirate equipment too.

There is a bewildering array of devices available. Am I right in saying that some of these will read engine codes but not ABS and Airbag

http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGUSB.html This is a basic scanner you connect to a laptop. It's very limited but it will scan all the car for codes, you cannot code parts, keys etc or do any adaptations with it. If you're doing a lot of work yourself you might consider the full version of VCDS, it's dealer level diagnostic tool for the cost of a dirty weekend. (Avoid cheap Chinese clones of VCDS, they have names like VAG 11.11) A basic stand alone scanner is your other option Vgate Scan VS450 VW Audi Seat Skoda Fault Code Reader Scanner Engine ABS AIR BAG | eBay (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Vgate-Scan-VS450-VW-Audi-Seat-Skoda-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-Engine-ABS-AIR-BAG-/320915270924?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4ab80a6d0c#ht_1540wt_1008)

Ok cheers for the info.
I think I will go for the basic stand alone unit as it is reasonably priced.

I would appreciate other members' comments on this particular unit good or bad.

This is amazing. My new coil arrived yesterday and when fitted the engine ran as normal. After a while the engine management light went out of its own accord without having to take it back to garage to be reset. Is this normal?
