Battery Regeneration on Braking

In the brochure for the B7 it states that "... BlueMotion Technology models are fitted with a battery regeneration (recuperation)system, meaning that energy is recovered from the braking process and used to charge the battery...". Anyone out there know what this means and how it works?

When I was young I had a bicycle with a dyohub . It powered the lights, I imagine this is something similar in principle Dynohubs (http://sheldonbrown.com/dynohubs.html)
