Picked up my Golf GT this morning. Asked to swap the Iphone lead for a USB one and was told that wasn't possible.

The salesman was a bit useless to be honest. I've tried the USB MDI cable from my old MK6 and it doesn't work.

Can anyone give me the part nr for the new USB lead for the mk7 please?

According to ETKA there is an "adapter wiring set for MDI interface" and the part number is 000 051 446 B and the cost is listed as £31.97.

There also seem to be some units which are called "connection for usb and aux-in" which have 3 differenr part numbers - 5G0 035 222, 5G0 035 222 C and 5G0 035 222 D which seem to be for different models and they are priced at £21.48.

I suggest a visit to the dealer and a word with the parts department and they can then show them to you on their copy of ETKA and work out which item is most suitable for your particular car. Perhaps you could then inform the salesman and suggest he pays for which one you need.

Any problems come back to me and I will send you a print out from my copy of ETKA.

Thanks for the info. Can you confirm those leads are different from the mk6 USB lead? - Just to make sure that the issue is with the lead and not the USB flash-drive I have.

The illustration and part number for the lead IS the same as for a 2012 Golf - 000 051 446 B. So perhaps it's the lead that is the problem.

Dave B,

I have tried the USB lead from my Mk6 in My 7 and one that my dealer sent me foc but find that my Samsung mp3 player isn't recognised. Interestingly a USB stick loaded with music works with the same lead and I'm wondering if it has something to do with the USB2 standard. I'll be interested to hear how you get on (and the part number for the lead if you find one that works).

Are the 2 leads you have the same?

I'll have to check the part numbers to confirm but I believe they are likely to be the same number altough one was manufactured in China and the other Slovenia I believe.

I've had abit of a play this weekend with mine. Using the MK6 lead a 2GB USB stick works, as does a 4GB stick.

An external 500GB HD and 32GB USB stick does not.

All were formatted to FAT32.

I think I might just buy a large SD Card, but need confirmation of the largest compatible one that will work first before I do. I want a 64GB one ideally.

Before I bought my MK6, I purchased a Zen mp3 player/radio and then realised, from those who know better, that all I needed was a USB memory stick. I think the one I bought was 8GB and so put all my classical albums on that and that was plugged into my car, using the lead already there under the armrest. It works fine and means I don't have to leave an expensive (or cheap) mp3 player baking in the summer heat or freezing in winter, in the car.
I hope that, if I buy the MK7, this USB stick can be snucked away in the appropriate place and used again with the correct lead. I believe this is behind the spring loaded flap by the gear lever.

I hoped the same, but using a 32GB USB stick; doesn't work.

Dave,

How is your usb stick formatted?

If it is exfat then that may be the issue. NTFS formatting may work.

it's ex-fat. The manual says FAT32.

I'll go and try NTFS now :)

Isn't there an SD slot to that the music could be transferred to an SD card and used there or is that slot for something not related to music reproduction?

My manual says that the biggest SD card that I can use is a 16gb SD card. (2.0tdi 150 dsg)

An SDXC card can be as large as 2Tb.

Just tried it after formatting to NTFS. immediately says no compatible media found.

Kingston Technology SDX10V/128GB 128GB Secure Digital Extended Capacity Flash Card: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-SDX10V-128GB-Extended/dp/B0090J5XLS/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1363627847&sr=1-3)

I'm using this SD card with the Discover Nav Pro and it works perfectly, though there is a 4000 file limit. To get round this you can use an iPod Classic. I got a 160Gb one second hand on eBay for £100.

NTFS and EXFAT can both accept more than 4GB data.

Fat32 can accept up to 4GB

It may be that the usb slot will only recognise Fat32.

Try formatting to that and see if that is recognised.

The two leads I have are part numbers 5NO 035 558 2212 VVL (Slovenia) and 5NO 035 558 0309 AMP (China) and one came from my Mk 6 Golf and the other was probably taken from a Mk 6 the dealer had on the forecourt.

I'm using a 16GB Kingston DT101 G2 stick with the VW Slovenian lead/connector and that is recognised as a media device and music is played through the interface without a problem.

Hi, I had a similar problem but needed the right cable for the Discover Pro not showing album art work (separate threads somewhere I seem to remember)

I did a bit of digging and got these MDi cable part numbers for Golf 7 from my local VW dealer....

5N0 035 558 = USB
5N0 335 554 B = iPod audio cable (supplied with car)
5N0 335 554 C = iPod audio and video cable (needed for album art on Discover Pro)

When I changed to the "C" cable my album art not showing problem went away so hope the right part may also work for you.

Hope this helps

I think I'm just going to buy an SDXC card, they're about £30 on Ebay which is what a replacement USB cable will cost me anyway.

Hi, I quoted those part numbers to my dealer and he could not find them telling me the part number was not recognised. Dealer is Lookers VW Blackburn by the way, which dealer did you use it seems to me a lot of dealers are not very up to speed on the mk7 any info would be appreciated.

Is it worth nicking my own USB lead out of my MK6 when the time comes to order and take over my new MK7 whenever that is? Mine is coded 5NO.035.558

In a word, yes. Picked up my Mk7 last week and it also came with no USB lead. I grabbed the lead from the Mk 6 that I was returning and it works fine. Hope this helps.

Same here - although I've since got a 64SDXC card off ebay which also works fine.

Yes mate. As I have the GT I have 2 SD card slots - SD Card 1 is for the SatNav, SD Card 2 is for music. Works perfectly.

Got these part numbers from my local dealer Northampton VW Home : Northampton Volkswagen : Volkswagen UK (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/retailers/find-us/00687/northampton-volkswagen/northampton)

Took them while to find them though so you may be right about the dealers being a bit behind the game.

Cant comment on what that eBay seller is saying but I have the "C" red collar cable with the part number I stated (cable supplied direct from VW) and it works fine.

Just a note that ex-FAT is not FAT32. Might be worth reformatting those disks as FAT32 rather than ex-FAT.
