Today's Auto Express has as it's Top Story details of the new Golf VII GTI and it says order books will open late next month, with the first UK deliveries scheduled for June. VW has hinted the GTI will cost much the same as the outgoing model, which starts from £25,650.

Two engines will be offered both 2.0 TSI, one producing 217 bhp and a new Performance Package version producing 277 bhp. Accelerations times for 0-62 mph are 6.5 secs and 6.4 secs respectively. These are on a par with the Ford Focus ST which claims 6.5 secs, despite having a more powerful 247 bhp turbo engine. Co2 emmissions are 139 g/km compared with the Focus ST's 169 g/km. The quoted mpg is 47 for the 6-speed manual and 44.1 for the 6-speed DSG version. The GTI also gets a more aggressive body kit, a rear spolier, twin chrome exhausts and 17-inch Brooklyn alloy wheels. The interior comes with the famous tartan GTI pattern on standard sports seats along with red-stiched GTI leather steering wheel and red ambient interior lighting. Standard kit will include front and rear parking sensors, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control.
