I'd read that all Mk7s below 120bhp have the torsion bar rear suspension instead of the multi-link. But the recent What Car review of the 1.4TSi 122 says it has torsion beam.

Can anyone confirm which type of suspension comes with this engine?

Thanks.

I too have read some places saying the 122 has torsion beam and others reporting it to be Multilink, so I'm not sure either. Either way it only appears to affect the ride over bumps and rough surfaces etc, not so much the handling.

I thought torsion beam was so 1990's?

My old Citroen Xsara had a torsion beam and after nearly 300k it sort of broke and both the back wheels ended up having minor negative camber.

My understanding is that the S model has torsion beam, but the SE and GT models have multi-link.

Morris Marina had torsion bar front suspension, it was crap and liable to pull part of the floor off

Just found this:
Volkswagen Golf VII (http://www.autozine.org/Archive/Volkswagen/new/Golf_VII.html)

It says:
"Another major change is the rear suspension. While most models continue to employ multi-link setup, those with less than 120 hp are now served with torsion-beam axle. Why? Volkswagen believes the cooking models hardly need a sophisticated suspension, so it would rather save money and weight by adopting the simpler torsion-beam setup."
