1.4 Tsi CoD vs. 2.0 TDI

Hi,

Looking at the various reviews and mpg, I understand that the new cylinder on demand engine is probably close to the fuel consumption of the 2.0 TDI (and petrol costs about 8% less than a litre of diesel).

Am I correct?

I currently have an Audi A3 2.0 TDI, and looking at a new company car. I do probably 12,000 miles per year, so given the BIK rate of the 2.0 TDI (and not great reviews), I am considering moving back to a petrol car.

The new 2.0 TDI does not seem to deliver the lower full consumption expected, seems to work not so well with DSG, and also create issues with Start/Stop. The 1.4 Tsi with DSG does not seem to have those issues, and is quieter.

Hello, in your situation the 1.4 TSI is almost certainly the better bet. As you say in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 its very close to the 2.0 TDI and the BIK on the TSI is better. At 12,000 miles per year you are unlikely see any cost savings going for the diesel.

DSG is interesting as on paper at least it improves the TSI fuel consumption but seems to make the TDI drink more, maybe because its still using the older 6-speed box as opposed to the 7-speed.

Also worth pointing out if you are looking to stick with the Audi brand, its likely they will bring out the cylinder on demand 1.4 in both the A1 and A3 within the next few months.

As an alternative the BMW 320d ED Auto may be worth a look. It delivers 109g/ km co2 and achieves 68.8mpg combined, very impressive for a 163PS Automatic Diesel.

I checked with Audi and they told me last week that the 1.4 Tfsi 140bhp CoD engine will not be available on the A3 until the summer, June at the earliest, so I am now considering a Golf, and it is surely much improved from the last version.

Yes, I am not sure why DSG would make fuel consumption worse on a diesel and better on a petrol car.

I had a 1.4 tsi golf and it drank fuel so i bought a 1.6tdi much better got a cracking deal as well paid just over £16000 brand new

Thanks, I didn't know about the MW 320d ED and it looks indeed impressive in term of numbers. However, it's expensive and with hardly any base equipment. Also, the ED version is having 16 inch wheels, so does not look that great.

I was referring to the new 1.4 Tsi with ACT/cylinder-on-demand (140bhp). In term of stats, it won't have the MPG of a 1.6 TDI but seems to be very close to the 2.0 TDI.
