im going to try my hand at changing the discs and pads on my 2.0 TDI 58 plate A4.

Ive changed the pads on my girlfriends peugeot before but never discs.

Do i need any special tools or is it a straight forward job on the audi's?

any adive would be appreciated, thanks

I think the front ones are simple, but the rear ones require special tools. Im not sure though

i find the real hassle is getting the piston back in, much easier with a special tool and not too expensive from halfords and the like.

for the disks i find soaking the little screw the night before in wd40 always helps to get it off the next day, other wise drill it out ;)

oh and copper grase on the back of the pads to stop them squeeling...

forgot if it is the rears you must have a special tool to wind the pistons back in whilst compressing them. If its got the elctronic hand brake and its like mine you need VCDS to do the job :zx11:

Mine need changing in the not too distant future, Audi want £400 to change pads and discs, sure i could do them for a lot less. Best place to buy them ? GSF ??

If you cannot spell it, don't do it.

Hell, you could end up fitting hobnobs, from your coffee BREAK, instead of BRAKE pads. :nana:

what are VCDS?
search 'ross tech' a special lead and software, the ones used to diagnose your car etc. afaik this is needed to release the rear parking brake.

surley i could leave the car in gear and leave the electronic hand break off?

i have a VGATE scan tool but it doesnt seem to have a hand brake option so ill have to try the above.

that only releases the brake enough to release it, not enough to get new pads in. if it was that easy, garages wouldn't spend the money on the kit.

OK, warning light came on today, so there going to red changing sooner than I'd hoped.

Any idea of cost from Audi or am I better of going to a motor factors?

I know I'll have to get a tool to wind pistons back. Is it an easy(ish) DIY job ?
