Advice needed!

I´m a new member, looking for a little knowledgeable advice. I´m looking to buy a 2003 A4 estate, and looking forward to some understated, cool, German quality. I mentioned this to a friend, who basically said that I was totally mad, as A4´s are, according to him and some survey that he had read, hugely unreliable with a number of expensive problems. This deflated my excitement somewhat! Basically, before making, for me, a large finantial commitment, I would love the opinion of some experts on this topic. Many thanks.

Every car has it's faults.
With the b6 you should check that all electric work, make sure the front footwell are dry.
1.8T's suffer sludge in the sump.if on long life service which leads to low oil pressure.
Any idea what engine code or trim level on the car.
