Hi guys,

I recently purchased an A4 from the end of 2000 ( X reg ). I have noticed a quite high "biting" point but nothing else. The car is in a very good condition and has 84k miles on the clock. I have checked around and can get the kit for about 144 pound +-. Any idea of labour costs? would you advise to do it yourself without an actual garage to do it in? I feel quite confident that i could do it, done wuite a bit of labour, including replacing a complete engine in an A4 6 Cylinder, however, I never did a clutch before and am wondering if I should have a go at it. Any advise?

You can do it on the ground you need to get it up fairly high on axle stands and you need strong arms, usually 5 arms to do it properly. It would take a garage 6-7 hours labour ,on the ground you could double that. Probably be easier for you to take the engine out if you have a hoist certainly be quicker. BTW there's no Haynes type manual for removing the box on these

UPDATE

just had a quote from MrClutch, 415.99 GBP. Just the clutch kit i can have for about 140 GBP. I currently am unable to take the engine out as I am missing the tools and the space for it ..... So no DIY then, any suggestions where i could get it cheaper? (damn Quattro lol, makes things more expensive)

If you want it done properly, I wouldn't use mr clutch - if you do, insist they fit OEM parts, but your quote will increase.

If it were me (and it's not) I'd find a decent indy who know what they're doing and fit good quality parts.

Was that quote parts and labour? It's over 6 hours for the job if nothing goes wrong that's £50.00 minimum an hour hope this didn't ruin your Christmas! Engine out is probably easier if you don't have the tools, they're all the same from the bell housing forward

According to the quote yes:

The price for your Clutch is...

£415.99

Price includes:

Parts, labour & VAT and comes with a 2 year/20,000 mile warranty.

However, I am missing the hoist. And I can not get so many people to lift out the engine :P

Mate that quote is off, ask Crasher what he would charge. you can hire a hoist for a day on Saturday morning gets you to Monday morning cost about 25.00

If you don't mind driving the car to N. London then i could do it for you, just fitted a clutch to a quattro 2 days ago ! Here's how i do it, removing the engine way ! £415 Is a good quote but they will use cheap clutch parts which you dont want on a turbo quattro sport ! I used a LUK clutch and it's ok so far, bites high though but does not slip yet on the mapped engine ! Still bedding in the clutch ! You will need a liter of PAS fluid and fresh antifreeze whilst at it ! Regards,

Whos crasher? Well to be fair, getting a hoist is the smallest problem, the bigger one is to actually have a place to do it. Those are very rare in Brighton. I did not expect this to be such a massive job to be honest.

Do they know it's a quattro? Sometimes people only hear the first have of what you say and fill the rest in whit white noise. I'd assume Mr Clutch would do it by removing the gearbox? That has to be slim pickings on that job. I'd do it engine out for €550.00 but I'm further away than adam!

Well as I said, the only thing I notice at the minute is the very high bite point. No slipping, rpm weirdness or whatever. I just actually tested it. Handbrake and first gear, 2nd gear. both times the car jumps a bit but dies instantly. Also pushed it a bit and watched the rpms. All seems fine. I will be going up to Newcastle at Christmas and will be introducing the car to a "guy" of my better halfs dad. He works at Vauxhall though lol

As above, make sure they know i's a quattro as the prop is in the way ! Engine out is the best way, takes longer but much easier ! You don't want to be under the car wrestling with a 60-70kg lump of metal especially as they have a habbit of not getting on the input shaft right away ! As Doctle Odd said, get in touch, i'm sure we'll work something out !
