Hey up - -
am thinking about getting a nearly new Jetta - a 1.9 TDI jobbie for about £10,500 ish. Now, I know its 'horses for courses' - this puts out 100bhp (as does the latest 1.9TDI Passat) - if I plumb for the 130BHP beastie - the 2.0 TDI, it will cost maybe another £2000. I think this price differential is when buying new too.

Is the extra 30 horses worth that kinda money ? My driving is mostly motorway, maybe 15k a year, not worried about top speed, or even take-off, but that mid-range 'hoomph' - 60 - 80 kinda thing.

Grateful for any guidance.
Gotta say something though, reference my first post abot the different colours of the TDI badges; the 1.9 and 2.0 makes it a little less confusing ( though I do note that early 2.0 DTI Vectra's not quite as powerful as the later 1.9 ones - but I digress :p).

I'll get me coat - - - - -

First of all, if you haven't already done so, have a drive of both. See what you get for your extra 2k.

30bhp is quite a big increase though, in my opinion, 2k dosn't justify it. Surely there must be other extras you get for that extra money... any creature comforts?

Don't forget, even at dealerships, prices are negotiable and you're in a better positiob if you're paying cash as supposed to part ex.

If you're financing the puchase via a fixed rate loan, then an extra 2k may not be much more on your monthly payments.

If you already decided you wanted a car with 130bhp then you can always buy the 100 and get it remapped to around 120-125 for about £300

thanks for the reply - 100 horses probably enough.
Re 'process are negotiable' - - - until recently I thought this was the case - but offered a dealer £10,500 for a £10,995 car and he didn't want to know - cash, no p/s or **** all.
I did have a test drive in the 1.9 - -and it did sem OK, though am judging it against a 1.4 Astra.
Gonna have to hunt a 130 bhp model down - - -

A good custom remap for around £500 will see over 140bhp from the pd100 engine.

thanks mate - - will probably go the 100 bhp route then . Whats involved in re0mapping - a chip change or something ? And would breaks/suspension be up to the increase in power ? Please, pardon my ignorance.

there will be extra spec with the 130 lump. there will also be extra insurance to pay over the 100 lump. you may also get an extra gear in the box

A cheaper option would be to buy a super chip for around £300 depending on where you get it from and if you still haven’t got that extra 30hp install a performance air filter.

To be honest i would justify the extra 2K, purely because of the fact that the 2.0 TDI 140 is smoother engine, and has a six speed box which makes such a difference and makes it so much more comfortable for motorway cruising, sure you could get an APR or Revo Re-map for around £500 which will give you around 145bhp on the 1.9TDI PD motor, i'd have the 2.0, just to have the six speed :o

I think he was comparing the 1.9 PD100 and PD130, not the 2.0. :) Although I do agree with the gearbox thing, most PD130s come with a 6 speed as well - mine does anyway.

Thanks for all replies - - -have now decided on a 54 plate Highline 130BHP Passat jobbie - like the proverbial off a shovel and pick it up the end of the month.
Goes without saying that will be a 'frequent flier' on this forum - - :o
