Took the inlet hose off to have a little look (EGR is the bit behind the flap)

First impression is that it didnt look as filthy as i would imagine!

Question for the techs - should I clean it or ignore it and can you safely clean in situ (eg squirt a car of manifold cleaner in there safely or is that a recipe for disaster!) or should i get the spanners out and remove it?

Thanks

seen worse, a lot worse. remove it if you clean it, or all that muck will go in your engine no matter how careful you are, plus it makes it easier.

I have the same engine and have been advised by the dealership that the EGR valve has a substantial oil leak, no loss of oil or marks on the floor! Is it an easy removal job ? I've been looking for a post to see how it comes out etc but have had no luck yet.

I wonder sometimes if they use the excuse of "it has an oil leak" just to get you to replace it as they can't be bothered to clean it. I had one go on my old car (2004 A4) and they said the samr thing. I had it replaced in the end (claimed under AA warranty) but I never did see the oil level drop or any oil in the plastic pan under the car.
