Starting Probs

This is what i posted in April
Hi I am a new member i have a mk3 L reg golf 1781 petrol, the other day the car was running well, i parked the car in the car park went off to do what ever i had to do,came out it started moved about 20 feet and it came to a halt completly cut out tried starting it just kept turning over. Looked at the distributor cap and the carbon in the middle had worn away so i get a new dist cap and rotor arm. Brillant it started and was fine for about 10 miles when i stopped and restarted it done the same thing went for about 30 feet and cut out the new dist cap and rotor look fine but it will not start for love or money.
Has anyone any ideas

I still have this problem with the car it seem to have a mind of its own when to start or not it can be fine for a few days and then it just wont start for another few days.
Since April i have changed the plugs, leads,coil,
When it dont start there is no spark at the plugs

I had a problem like this with a BMW 325 - it was the distributor at fault.

I also had the same problem with a Rover 25 - that turned out to be the crank sensor.

Hope this can push you in the right direction??
