After 2 days on the A4 saloon, it was time to go for the 2003 S4 Avant.

Next up was the S4 Avant. A lovely car also. Again about 95% correction with the owner happy to proceed with the rest of the car.

The processes were pretty much the same as for the A4 Saloon detail.

Upon completion, the owner and I drove to Eastwell Manor near Ashford for some of the general afters. It's amazing how this car holds the country lanes at 50mph.

I'd thoroughly recommend TURNERS VIEW Bed and Breakfast on Wraik Hill, Whitstable.

I'd also like to thank the owners for their hospitality over the four days and for providing me with the great experience working on both cars.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Cheers,
JOHN.

Amazing isn't it.

What do you use ? Sonus ? Portacable or Rotary ?

I like the Faracla stuff G6 (rarely used), G3 then G10, and am not afraid of getting out some 1500 or 2000 wet and dry where it is needed either. Having a rotary machine polisher does help though. I'd never dream of doing it on someone elses car though as a slip or to long in one spot equals disaster as I've learnt :o

Hiya Col,

The A4 thread has all the process and products outlined. Started on the PC about 4 months ago and so far have completed very good paint correction on 8 cars, seven of them Audis. Have recently moved onto Rotary and these are the first two full cars done using it. Lots of practice on spare panel etc plus have a willing A4 Avant owner nearby who offered his bonnet for further practice! Also re-done my A4 bootlid. It's confidence really, coming with practice under the lights and always using the paint gauge to monitor paint thickness and clearcoat shaving. Plastic bumpers only get 1500 rpm max. The heat generated with the Rotary is much greater than with the dual action and I also check this regularly with the back of my wrist. Patience and thoughfulness really, and some common sense in the area of Physics. I also looked out some training with three of Scotland's finest pro detailers. This helped immensely.

These two corrections I've just posted were the product of a 1000 mile journey and you bet I was not going to mess up! Not many people would have made that journey but I couldn't resist the colours and of course, the lure of an S4 Avant at this early stage. It was a great experience - the distance, the cars, not knowing their condition until I arrived - a challenge that I really didn't think too much about to be honest. All of it was exciting.

I mostly (on VAGs anyway) use the menzerna 3.02 intensive polish which breaks down nicely leaving only the lubrication residue to be wiped away. The finish so far has always been ready for last stage preparation. The Berlina Black Honda S2000 (http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=37777) I done last month only required a Menzerna final finsh polish on a firm polishing pad (SONUS White) due to the soft nature of the Jap paint.

Megs 6.5 in pads are my norm, you'll find the speeds, no. of passes etc in the A4 thread.

Hope this helps!

I take it you do this as your job? What would you charge to do this?

No I don't! I'd be too scared to give up my day job. It's the best hobby I've ever had though. I have good summer hols and now make better use of them. It's something I got turned onto when I saw someone else's work.

I was going to get my A4's lowers colour-coded but bought some detailing kit instead. It's the kind of hobby that gives great satisfaction when you see defects gradually being removed from the paint.

I live in cent Scotland mate and I ai't doing another long drive for a while! Sorry.

Eshrules is correct, I don't pay to advertise because that's not what I'm doing. I post some of what I've done to hopefully inspire others to try their hand at it. That's how I started. It's also good to hear what other people are doing and to learn things from them. I've been a strong supporter of a Detailing section on this forum, as the mods know. VAG cars are great and deserve to be looked after. There's different levels of detailing and machine polishing defects out is the pinnacle of it IMO. The finish is amazing, even on new cars.

I have looked at another German car forum and have found the attitude to detailing quite surprising. People driving about in £30k cars who are paying £500 for paint protection and accepting it! More people need to realise they can do a lot of it themselves at a fraction of the price for the initial outlay. That forum, however, now has quite a booming and steadily more-informed attitude towards car care.

It would be good to see this Detailing section become better than the one I've just mentioned. So, we need more threads and posts. There's a lot of nice cars on here - we just need to get more of the owners into this section and hopefully contributing.

Cheers,

J0HN
