our passat 130 tdi is due its service......128,000....with full history up till now

question is,should i put it into the ********?....they want around the £300 mark for a 40k service!
cambelt etc was done last service,so whats involved in a 40k service?...seems steep to me at £300 for a few filters and oil change or is this about rite?
any help would always be aprrecitated
is it worth while doing it myself or sending it to a reptuable vw specialist i know who will change half that?

People aren't that fussy about main dealer service any more and they are so expensive.
A specialist is half the price and as long as the correct oil's are used with good filters then that's ok.
If you look in your service book it will tell you what needs doing at the front,
as long as you keep all the receipts for oil's and filters you can do this yourself.

I have just completed a service on my car where I changed all the filters and the oil. It was really easy to do. The parts cost me £70 (£35 of which was the PD longlife oil 0W 30) which is considerably cheaper than what the local garage wanted £220!! Big Col’s guide to servicing is very helpful so read that. It took me 2.5 Hrs and that included losing a screw on the undertray… So you should be able to do it in that time with the correct tools.

I went into a garage and asked to see what they did for the service and they handed me their service check list. All they do is check al the levels of fluids, replace if necessary, and change the oil and filter and change the other filters, eg fuel and air. Mine did not look like they had been changed for years!! So much for my full vw service history. Other checks are fo the brakes and pads..

If you have a haynes manual, then any of them have a guide for all the service checks. Have a look for a guide.. Most of them are simple checks. :approve:

I just got quoted £150 for an oil change for my TDi 130 Passat from my local VW dealer. Needless to say, at that price, I'll be getting my hands dirty and doing it myself!!

:D Well it is really easy to do. Just make sure you have the correct oil and get a decent filter. GSF car parts sell VAG approved parts, that is where i got mine from thanks to Big Col for the advice...

I sucked out most of the oil oil from the filter housing with a big syringe and a length of plastic pipe.. It says that the capacity of the system is 4.5 litres, a 4 litre can of oil filled it for me, i guess there is a bit of oil left in the oil cooler when you drain it.

Have fun grovelling under the car ;)
