rear demiser and air recirculate not working

As per title, my late 2000 tdi avg avant has never worked, but now that the weather is getting colder, it become an issue...

I don't have aircon, and have checked fuses, and wiring to rear window. On another note, the temp control knob vent knob and fan knob don't illuminate at night with lights on??? not sure if they do normally......

Pull off the fan speed selector theres a tiny bayonet type bulb inside. are any wires broken or frayed between the tailgate and the body?

thanks, pulled speed selector, the bulb behind it is fine, but not lit up. No frayed wires that I can see.

I think the fact that the illuminating lights dont work, and the recirculate air button doesn't work means they are linked............

I take it no power at the tailgate? did you plug it in and check on vcds? is the switch working?

i have vcds lite, but don't know what blocks to check??? no power at tailgate

Ok. You need to check if power is coming to the switch, if so check the switch and replace as necessary. VCDS lite I haven't used but I believe its very restricted

Thanks Paul, will do that. Starting to think that the after market radio was wired in wrong......

I'm in Kells. Is the radio not standard iso plugs?

Haven't removed it yet.. but:
radio only works with lights switched on, and radio goes out if the display dimmer is turned down low. Which makes me think anything could have been done.

Sounds like someone wired the stereo into the circuit that lights the switches. you need to fix that first. pull the radio and check where it's wired to, let me know

Its gone from bad to worse :(.

I pulled radio and checked wiring, not too bad. the aux power was from instrument lights so easy to sort.

The wiring to rear demist is fine. I always had a missing display, but I pulled fuse 15 (instruments) to check and when re inserted have NO instruments and a clicking behind speedo. It stops when I remove the fuse.

vcds says 2 faults 00667 ambient temp signal 29-00 short to ground.
00668 supply voltage terminal 30 53-00 supply voltage too low.

Tried to reboot by disconnecting battery. After driving for 15 mins or so, the fuel warning buzzer sounded... at the same time, the instruments came back to life.. bloody gremlins
