Passat 2.0 TDi, 140ps. '07 plate.

I get a brief whistle on lifting off the accelerator while going up through the gears. Is this just the normal sound from the turbo wastegate or something to be concerned about?

I have exactly the same problem with my 2.0 TDI; does anybody know the answer?

On my old 1.8turbo Golf it was a slightly leaky wastegate (on recirculating types) that's with petrol . May be the same on Diesels.

I see, so.. is it normal? I mean is it a 'functional' noise?

Can't say I've ever noticed it on my Dec 06 140TDI (he says, touching wood!).

I would, however, be tempted to go to the dealer and check, so that it can be put on record in case there is a problem later (e.g. when just out of guarantee....). As someone advised on another thread, keep a record of any problems (real or imagined) and visits, responses, correspondence, phone calls etc. Sounds drastic, but in my opinion it's good advice if it's your money (as is the case for me) that bought the car.

I get a subdued whistle from my 170PS DPF Manual if I gently increase/decrease engine revs around 1700-1800rpm which I assumed to be the turbo winding up and down as it cuts in around 1750rpm?

Yes, exactly! Around 1700 rpm when I gently (de)press the accelerator (especially at shifting gears). I hope it's a normal sound.

turbo's do make a noise. if the performance is ok then i wouldn't worry too much.;)

That explains it - my wife keeps telling me I'm a bit deaf :o

I can only hear the whistle when the window's open and I'm lifting off the throttle while passing a wall or hedge.

I quite like it actually.

Same here. I will mention it at the first service. Don't expect the dealer to listen or even understand though.

I tend to believe it's a normal sound for our 2.0 TDI VNT. There are many people with this issue and if there had been a flaw the VW would have called us for service or something like that... I think...
