05 Fabia 1.2 HTP boot release not working

I have just bought the wife a 2005 fabia 1.2 HTP, I know cruel to buy her such a low spec car but it is only to nip around town. When trying to get into the boot I tried the boot release lever at the side of the drivers seat then went to the boot but it was not opened. I then got my son to pull the lever and i stood at the boot and hey presto it works. The only concern is that our five year old will not always be around to assist with boot opening duties. Has any one had experience of this and is there a quick fix. My initial thought is that the release mechanism needs some adjustment. but before I try this I thought I would ask you helpful lot for some assistance.

See if you can hear the solenoid working if so might be the connecting rod come off,if not its the solenoid or wiring which is less likely.
