I've just bought the above car and have issues with a steaming exhaust! At the garage the guy told me it was condensation as the car had been stood for a week but to go get it checked out if I had any concerns - this was Saturday. After 160 mile round journey to visit my brother and to dry out any condensation the coolant level had dropped by about 5mm and the exhaust was streaming again the following day when I started it. Before I bought the car the garage changed the cambelt and water pump, but even if the water pump was incorrectly fitted for whatever reason this wouldn't leak into the exhaust surely? I guess my question is could this be anything else other than head gasket?

TIA

Condensation will come out of the exhaust anyway but if coolant is defiantly being burnt I would say that it is likely to be the head gasket as it is a common problem only early ALT engines.

Thanks for your reply! I'll keep my eye on the coolant level - I've just been pointed the error of my ways, checking the level cold and comparing to the level when hot!

A friend has just read my fault codes on VCDS Lite 1.0 and has come up with the following:

19593 - Intake Manifold Runner Control: Basic Setting not Completed P3137 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
16785 - EGR System flow insufficient P0401 - 002 - Insufficient Flow - Intermittent
19594 - Intake Manifold Runner Control regulation deviation. P3138 - 002 - ???????????
16698 - Misfire(s) Detected; Single (unspecified) Cylinder P0314 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

01272 - Positioning Motor for Central Flap (V70) 41-00 - Blocked or No Voltage
01810 - Actuating Motor for temperature flap 41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent

01134 - Alarm Horn (H12) 49-00 - No Communications

01317 - Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285) 49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
00466 - Control Module for Steering Column Electronics (J527) 49-00 - No Communications
00852 - Loudspeaker(s); Front 36-10 - Open Circuit - Intermittent

I plan to go back to the garage I bought the car from and present them with these readings but what do they mean? Is it likely the garage will fix them of are they too big a job on a car I bought for £3k? The only issue I have with the car is the misfire, on a couple of occasions it has stalled the car.

Clear all the codes and drive it again for a few days then re-read, only trust what comes up on the second read PROVIDING nothing has been disconnected with the ignition on in the intervening period.
