Replacement Symphony II BOSE Head Unit

My original Symphony II Head Unit (in a B6 A4 Cab 2004) is now out of action after displaying the common "CD Error 3" message. After unsuccessfuly trying to realign the six CD trays & get it working again, although I've managed to get the CDs out of the mechanism, there's now no sound from any of the radio, tape or CD. I suspect another part in the HU circuitry has blown (after seeing a few puffs of smoke!)


So I think I need another HU, but I wondered if I need a BOSE specific HU or could I replace with any Symphony II HU for an A4 (B6) cab (on the assumption that the BOSE element is just in the speakers & the amps)? I'll also be getting a VAGCOM reading to hopefully identify the sound issue.

Any thoughts/experience welcome.
