My AVG Internet Security is coming to the end of the subscription so need some recommendations on whether to renew or go elsewhere.

What's everyone using along with prices etc?

There are 3 machines (all MS) so would need a multipack.

I'm happy with AVG, can't fault it just seeing what else is out there :)

You can get decent protection for free :)

A combination of the following is sufficient (imho!)

AntiVirus - MSE (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials) comes highly recommended from almost everyone respectable.

Firewall - The stock Vista/7 firewalls when coupled with your router are more than enough for home use. If you want to step up a bit, something like Comodo (http://www.comodo.com/products/free-products.php) will do the job.

AntiSpyware - Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/) - you just have to remember to run it periodically.

Personally, I'm using KIS (http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/kaspersky_internet_security) and have done for the past few years. With two curious children, it's saved my PC a few times :)

I thought all the free stuff was tripe and the paid stuff was where you had to be - seems I was wrong.

I'll give all those a go - still got another month on AVG so plenty of time to test on my old laptop.

Thanks! ;)

It used to be that way, but not any more.

Avast! (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download)is another AV program if you don't get on with MSE.

User education is the best form of protection though - in life in general too :D

If you want to stay with AVG, AVG free (http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage) is also recommended.

...as long as you remember to uncheck the bundled crap upon installation!

AVG is crap. It ought to be called Norton's little sister which would give people a hint in regards to what a system killing app it is.

I've been using avast for the last 3 1/2 years. Prior to that I was using KIS. Neither have let me down and cost isn't bank breaking either ;)

Although not free, I've used ESET NOD32 on my machines for years, and never had an issue - renewal price for three machines recently wasn't disastrous either.

Have to agree with Microsoft Security Essentials, standard Firewall and router. For malware I've used SpyBot and Ad-Aware for a long time and they always do the job. I have converted a number of businesses to these tools and they have always been extremely happy with the results.

ESET Smart Security 5. It's worth paying for, nothing worse than an infected PC. Eset has been great, runs in the background without bothering you. Major plus is that it doesn't slow you PC down or your online gaming down, that sold it for me, updates automatically. In 4 years, never had a hiccup.

I have used Avast for the last 12 months and never had any problems

I like the safe zone feature for full protection when using online banking

Not the freeware version but it stopped my pc from infections and crashes

I also use advanced system care
