View Full Version : Rear Wheel bearing exploding...

My rear right wheel bearing has given up on me, and the inner race has welded itself to the stub. :aargh4:

I've got the bearing kit, with the new hub (why is this all one part? Costs a fortune!), but now need a new stub axle. I managed to get the hub off, but the stub axle and the inner race are stubbornly stuck together. I've removed the stub, and tried attacking it, but it's definitely dead.

Is the £77 VW want for the part reasonable? Seems like a lot to me for a small piece of machined steel.

My rear left is rumbling and has some movement, it's on my to do list (although i haven't got the specific tools for the job) and i've seen my hub for £66-£80 in various places. Fom that i would suggest that a VW original would be about right pricewise. Good luck with it.

It wasn't the hub that was the issue- it was that the inner race had welded onto the stub axle. I found the part on eBay for £50. The hub/bearing assembly was £65 on GSF, and £120 from VW.

I sorted it all out today, it took me about 15 minutes. It seems that as long as one of the races hasn't welded to the stub then it's really easy. I'd sort it out ASAP so that you don't have the issue I had with it welding!

Is this the part you fixed? if so, how did it go? I have been under the impression that you need specific tools, a puller and presser?

Yup, that's the one. Took me about 15 minutes to do it, including refitting the stub axle. Because the outer bearing race is part of the hub, you don't need a puller to change it, as you change the whole hub/bearing assembly. If it's welded on (like mine) then you will need something though, to remove the old hub.
