dreaded light

first post and first ever vw i have owned but......
i have an issue where the 'emissions -workshop' light is illuminated on the display as soon as i put the key in without starting it up....it goes out when started but the engine managements remains on..
starts and runs fine !
any help would be appreciated....
its a 55 plate passat B6 3C2 140hp saloon if that helps

Could be EGR related, if it drives ok. But you really need a fault code scan to pinpoint the problem though.

i have managed to get the code read today and are as follows

vw code -- 16785 egr system insufficient flow
and obd2 P0401-- short with power intermittent

any further help in solving the issue would be appreciated
