Mines a 180 Avant quattro. The last tankful did 35mpg, mixed roads. Seems like this might be what to expect ? Anyone seen improvements with a remap ? Anyone tried Shell V power diesel yet ?

I was getting about 33-34mpg with mixed driving, just done a run down to Taunton from the Midlands after a re-map, driving fairly careful and got 41mpg, dropped to 38.5 now with cold start town driving over the last few days though, will see what it averages out after the trip back up tomorrow.

I tried v-power both before and after the re-map and noticed naff all difference, if anything a lack of power! I used to to use the v-power petrol in both an S2000 and a civic and you notice the difference in both those, especially the civic.

The re-map gives a large improvement to power, big grinns :D after having this done! The only down side I have noticed so far is that if I floor it in too low a gear, say 50mph in 6th and there is a fair bit of black smoke out the back as the turbo spins up.

Thanks for that guys. Fishr, who did your remap out of interest ?

Hi, Sorry should have put a bit more detail on my prevoius post. Mine is the 180bhp Avant manual, the re-map was done by Mark at Chip 'n Spin who frequents this thread.

I would be interested if you other 180bhp guys could do a test for me, once warm, hold the speed at 50-55mph in 6th gear and then floor it while looking in the rear view mirror - how much black smoke do you get? I am sure I got non before the re-map, so would be interested to see what you guys get with an un-mapped engine.

Fish, Tried this with the 2001 180 Avant quattro and no smoke that I can see. Mind you, no shove in the back either. Does the smoke come with some decent pick up ?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for trying that, yes it takes a few seconds of lag and then you feel the power kick in a lot lot more than before. The 2 main differences I noted along side the extra overall grunt are changing from 1st to 2nd is a lot smoother and the kick when you put you foot down in 6th at anything above about 70mph. Oh and the couds of smoke! but that really only happens when your at low revs, where you have to wait for the turbo to spin up and you have your foot to the floor, I could just change down a gear!

Hi there
I have a 2000, 2.5 diesel quattro and had a similar issue with the clouds of smoke. when changing up to early. with mine (and it was really bad on mine) it turned out the crank case breather filter was blocked and when the pressure built up it was all just venting down the exhaust. The dealers are meant to change the filter, but few know anything about it as its a bugger to get at.
You can do an easy check that is a good indicator. With the engine running and up to temp, take off the oil filler cap. If you hear an escape of pressure it might be the filter.

As for average Mpg its 35.5, which i have to say I'm a bit disappointed with

I am a newbie to the site but my electronic meter says about 39 to 42 on a good run, the engine is a 5 pot 2.5 TDI and has 200+K on the clock. The smoke is apparently normal for that engine when you clog it, it improves if you maintain high revs as it clears the deposits from the divert system, best done on a quiet county road with no traffic! Major mileage improvements with an air filter change (worth a try - but a pantomime to get at!) Worth trying too is ordinary Shell Diesel, I always use it and get much better mileage. Good luck

2002 2.5tdi quattro se v6
36-38 mpg mixed driving - would be more but just can't help myself powering through roundabouts or any uneven curves really :D

My 2003 allroad has 170,000 on the clock and no smoke at all - even when you boot it.

I have recently just got a 2.5 tdi avant quattro 2000/W on 150,000, I have no clear drivers information readout as the pixels have worn, so sadly cannot get MPG figures. The car will drive for about 500-520 miles on a full tank before the reserve buzzer sounds though.

Ive got a A4 2.5TDi Quattro Sport, its done 82K.

I am getting 34mpg nominally, although I drove from Newcastle to Manchester at 55 mph and got 48 mpg!!! dont worry, I was going to pick someone up and had plenty of time to get there, it was a one off!!

So it is possible to get a good figure!!

I do get black smoke now and again, was going to get it looked at in next service!!

Been thinking about a re-map, not sure where to go up north? any suggestions?

Also anyone know what I need to do about wheel alignment on a quattro, front tyres wearing badly on the inside!

Cheers

Rob

Dear Rob1973, re front tyre wear, check your front suspension struts, the ball joints tend to wear especially the top front, this caused similar wear on my front tyre. I get 43 mpg locally on my 1999 non quattro, inmotion chipped from 150 to 190 bhp, torque from 310 to 400 nm, I get black smoke but did before the rechip especially after economy driving, but what a difference to drive!!! 40mpg with the cruise set to 70, about 36-37 at 85 ish, and 32 around town.

Mine pulls pretty well at 55 in 6th, and never makes any smoke at all.

I know this is different but my 2.5TDI AAT engined (5cyl) A6 Avant on 145k does 45 mpg.:D

Yep the old 5cylinder engines are supposed to be a bit more efficient. My 2.5tdi 140bhp averages 37mpg in a mix of city driving at weekends and motorway work during the rush hour, 35ish for just city driving and 43 on motorways at constant 70mph (I don't speed - honest guv), and that's with the power sapping 4wd quattro. Interestingly my old Volvo 850 with the same 140bhp engine avraged a couple of mpg more for each of the scenarios - but I'll tell you what it was a much more sporting drive and handling than the quattro, but the build quality wasn't upto audi standards.

Forgot to add that's with 185k on the clock. When I use a mix of 30:70 veggie oil : diesel the mpg is a little lower

Hi all,

Run an allroad 180 tdi - fabulous car!

used normally about 33 mpg
used silly about 22 - did this in europe was doing a silly speed
used cautiously about 42 - did this on a recent run to see what it can do over 38 miles with average speed about 50 mph.

bought allroad 4 months ago for towing a caravan etc does this very well and is a really good touring estate

2002 model with an absolute wad of extras - paid 12k had done 54 k miles but the condition is really good

sorry for going on - but one of the best cars I've had so far.

happy motoring!:beerchug:

On the A6 (149k miles), normally average 34mpg on the run to and from work, on a run it depends on the speed, at 80-85mph I expect about 41mpg, best ever was a 100 mile journey up the M42 / M1 in the traffic so doing around 55mph for most of it and achieved 51mpg which I was most impressed with

The A3 (74k miles) averages 44mpg on the work run, 50:50 motorway and urban driving :notworthy

All in all I'm more than happy with that

I've got a 2001 180bhp 2.5 Tiptronic Allroad. When sitting at a steady 70mph on my way into work (17miles of dual carriageway) I'm only getting low 30's!!!!!!

What can I do to help improve it? It's obviously not right as you guys seem to be able to horse it and still get better MPG!:aargh4:

1996 TDI 140 (5 Pot) Avant on 190K still does 43mpg general average or 48mpg in warmer weather with more longer runs. This is measured by litres in vs mileage and not the computer which tends to be 3 or 4 mpg optimistic.

It used to smoke like a bonfire when booted (complete grey-out behind:Blush:) but disabling the EGR cured that and improved mpg by a couple too. Very efficient engine. Likes Shell or Esso ordinary diesel best. Hates Asda..... 3 -4 mpg loss! Didn't like bio much either but ran much more economically on Diesel after - once I'd changed the fuel filter - twice :D

Ah thats cheating with the I5 ;) You have one less cylinder of pumping loss, and 14 valves & 3 camshafts less mechanical loss! :p

Sad that the V6 was a step backward in that respect really :(

Well, this is true of course :approve:. Leaving the problem of what to replace your I5 powered car with when it finally dies...... The complexity and expense of the V6 does not encourage - more like "strikes fear"!
