SEAT 124 Sport Coupé entered in 2012 Silvretta Classic
550 kilometres with the Alps as a fantastic backdrop: the Silvretta Classic counts as one of the top events on Europe’s oldtimer scene. This year SEAT has entered a 124 Sport Coupé 1600 built in 1972; it will be driven by the company’s Vicepresident of Production Dr. Andreas Tostmann.
Between July 5 and 7, some 160 rare historic car models are entered for the 2012 Silvretta Classic, and will make their way through the breathtaking mountain scenery. The three main stages are run in the Montafon, Vorarlberg and Tyrol regions of the Austrian Alps, and entrants will have to tackle numerous Alpine passes, often on roads that climb steeply. Speed is not the aim, however, but precise timekeeping, so that even the oldest cars taking part have the same chances of success as the “youngtimers” built up to 1992.
The SEAT 124 Sport Coupé 1600 was introduced in 1970. Its two-door body contains four full-size seats, and its elegant design is very impressive even now. The 1.6-litre petrol engine develops 110 hp and gives the car a top speed of 180 km/h. The 124 Sport Coupé was the first SEAT model to have a five-speed gearbox. It was followed in 1973 by the slightly modified 124 Sport Coupé 1800, with a 1.8-liter engine developing 118 hp. The SEAT 124 Sport Coupé (1600 and 1800 versions) remained in production from 1970 to 1975; altogether, about 23,000 were built.
