Spotted this on a motors forum in Ireland and thought the solution was interesting.
Having never seen it mentioned here I just thought i would post for others.

"Since I bought my Audi A4 (2002) 4 years ago I've been having this re-occuring problem
pretty much every time I start the engine.

I wait for it to prime, I turn
key and the engine turns over a number of times before it starts. This process
takes about 1.5 seconds of the engine turning over before it fires up. This
happens 8 out of 10 times I start it and sometimes fires up immediately as it
should. No engine faults appear in diagnostic tool and no dashboard warning
lights appear.

I've brought it to the garage and they can't find fault.
It's not a huge issue atm but it's a bit annoying and I know its wearing out the
starter motor more than it should. The weird thing is is that it takes the EXACT
same amount of time each time before the engine fires up leading me to believe
that theres only a small issue thats causing this. Something to do with fuel not
being pushed to the engine perhaps? I'm no mechanic by any stretch of the
imagination but would love if anyone has any input on this type of issue and why
it occurs?"

The problem turned out to be the headlight switch.

A mechanic, on the forum, suggested testing by starting the car with the parking lights on, this solved the issue for a number of posters on the forum. New switch and never happened again.
