View Full Version : EGR Diagnosis...

Been getting MIL light on with code P401 EGR insufficient flow (A5, 3.0TDI CCWA). Have cleaned out inlet manifolds and replaced EGR valve but am contemplating cleaning out or replacing the EGR cooler now. Before I do, i wanted to be sure of the diagnosis, so have been doing live measurements using VCDS. I captured the following just as the MIL light came on. To me, it looks like the actual air mass reading is higher than expected, when the EGR valve is almost fully open. Is that evidence of the clogging up in the EGR cooler, if so great, i'll get on with it. Or could it be a faulty MAF? Don't want to fork out more money/time for EGR Cooler unless it's really to blame...

Thanks for advice/opinions/experiences!

Hi, I have similar problems. Allready posted on another topic about this.

Can you do some DYI for the inlet manifold and EGR cleaning, since this seems to be quite common problem.

--------------------------------------------
I keep getting these fault codes;

2 Faults Found:
4807 - EGR System: Insufficient Flow
P0401 00 [096] - Short to Ground

5215 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure: Too Low
P0087 00 [032] - Cannot Be Tested at this Time

Car has done 100k miles/160k km, and I'm thinking it is EGR valve that need to be cleaned. What do you think?

Engine bay looks like a rats nest and I'm not really sure where to look fot the EGR valve http://www.a5oc.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
I hope someone wiser can show me, here is the pic of engine:

Hi,
Short to Ground: maybe electrical problem?
Any advice how to troubleshoot EGR System on CCWA 3.0tdi ?

Hi mate,
Can't claim to be an expert, but i've cleaned both lower inlet manifolds and replaced EGR valve. Finally when the light came on again i bit the bullet and replaced the EGR cooler. So far, so good. Seems to be a flaky part imho...

Thanks mate,
how about did you also have the 'short to ground' in your fault code? Because I'm thinking mine might be electrical fault..

Hi, no i did not; only ever EGR insufficient flow. What do you suspect? the valve? I have a brand new one for sale if you want to buy it, though beware if you eventually buy the egr cooler it comes with the valve (hence i ended up with two new ones!). PM me if you are interested.

Hi, I'm interested but can't PM since I have too few posts :)

Can you state the VAG part number, I'll check is it exactly the same. Should be since I have CCWA also.
So I'm interested yes, maybe you can PM me?
