Hi all,

I have noticed a grinding or rubbing noise coming from the front end of my 57 Jetta 2.0 TDi only when turning sharp right or left and only at low speed. It's noticeable when parking or turning out of a tight angle etc. When the car is being driven at any other scenario there is no unusual noise so it seems to be related to when the car is at or near full lock.
If I turn to full lock with car stationary there is no noise, it only happens when the car is moving slowly in 1st or reverse.
Has anyone had this on their Jetta? It sounds simular to a bearing failure but there is no evidence of it when the car is travelling at 10mph+ or in a straight line.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I'm dreading taking it to VW for them to lighten my wallet!

yes mine has a grinding sort of noise on full left lock , crasher has posted that it is a common problem with the jetta/mark5 golf and the only solution is anew rack though greasing will reduce the noise

Hi there, I have a similar sounding problem of my 2007 A6 which has done 93k miles. The front brakes were done around a year and a half ago but still have plenty of meat on the pads, although there discs are worn some. The rear pads are more worn although still in good shapre and the discs seem fine.
I mention the above as I believe it to be relevant...............what is your situation re brakes?

The reason I ask is I have what I would describe as a "whooshing noise" on or around full lock and usually at low speeds such as in car parking areas. I've had the car to Audi few times about it as I feared a CV joint had gone, or perhaps a wheel bearing ( although there was no hum at higher speeds ) but they said no and everything seemed fine?
I took it to a few tyre specialists to ask their opinion and everything seems fine?

The noise is definitely speed dependent so I'm left to conclude its something to do with the brakes.
Either the backplate is rubbing against the discs on full lock, or perhaps as the discs are lipped slightly they may be grinding through the caliper?
I'm thinking they've been on there a while, they're lipped, as well as the rusty / dusty build up where the discs go through the caliper..........its all I can think of and as its driving me nuts I hope to get to it asap and see if I can resolve the problem.

Yeah my Jetta had the same issue from when I bought it (1 year old, 13K miles). Took it to VW and they couldn't find a problem. The noise didn't get any worse in the time I owned it (sold at 3.5 years and 44K miles) so I never bothered perusing it any further.

Hi, my 58 plate Jetta did this only when turning left and mainly when on, or nearly on full lock when pulling out from a junction.
Had a new rack fitted under warranty which made no difference and then had the offside wheel bearing changed and that cured it.

its not stones under the wheel when your turning the wheel ? Also never put the steering on full lock with power steering, you will burst seals etc. You will hear a change of note in the engine when doing this. It may be noiser on one side only while doing this !! When changing pads on the A6 or any car really, you can gently tap the top of the disc to get rid of the rusty lip at the top . GENTLY !! Then put some copper grease on the back of the new brake pad

RESOLVED >>>>>>>>

Hi all,
I meant to post back here and am sorry to say I haven't until now.....

I've had my issues fixed, the whooshing or grinding / rubbing noise, for me, was as expected.

Turns out that the backplate had been disturbed and was rubbing against the brake disc. A little gentle persuasion here n there and a little trial and error and the problem has gone, thank god.
If you have a similar issue, before spending some £££ it might be worth checking to see if you have the same problem?

Hope it helps :beerchug:

hi ive got a similair issue with my mk4 golf tdi 130. Will have a look at the rear brake pads now but the noise is as you described but it sounds like its coming from the front of the car.
