I have a 2002 1.8 GTI Turbo (150bhp) with 110k on the clock and am wondering about a remap. Can anyone offer any advice on the following:-

What type of remap is best?
What bhp am i likely to acheive?
Will my standard clutch / brakes cope with the extra power?
Will it cause more wear and tear on any parts?
Will it reduce the life of my engine?
Will my insurance company need to be notified?

Thanks in advance

Hi. With petrol turbo the only way to go is power, from 150 it will be mapped to aprox 185-190 and be within safe limits. Standard clutch and brakes are ok at this bhp, but if you go more with a bigger turbo/intercooler/cat back exhaust then clutch would be a definite thing to consider. As long as you maintain the vehicle, and it has been looked after, it will continue to run as normal. With insurance it is your choice to inform them, and from customers responses most would not cover a performance modification like this. (There are specialist insurance companies out there that will insure you). The VAG vehicles respond very well to remaps and are probably the best mod you can get done without needing to change expensive engine parts.
Hope this helps.

What type of remap is best?
Ideally a live map is best but given how old these engines are now, mappers have had over 10 years to develop their maps and there is little difference between the best of generic remap files to be honest. If however your after every little bhp or have upgraded any part that will affect the air:fuel ratio then a generic remap might not suffice - not least without some tailoring.

What bhp am i likely to acheive?
As yours is a 2002, it is likely to be either AUM or AUQ engine code which came fitted from factory with a k03s variant turbo as opposed to a k03 fitted on the older variants of the 20vt, the k03s is a more capable turbo and will yield anything in the region of 180-250 bhp, depending on the condition of the engine/turbo, modifications and the mapping.

Will my standard clutch / brakes cope with the extra power?
In short yes, but it depends how you drive. Really you could destroy a new clutch in a day on standard power.

Will it cause more wear and tear on any parts?
Yes, it will certainly show any weak parts of the engine. Heck, increasing power alone will cause quicker brake pad wear, clutch wear, tyre wear. But you also have the engine and turbo components too and they are subject to the same increased wear - albeit with varying degree of wear.

Will it reduce the life of my engine?
Yes, but so does neglecting service intervals. It's all relative and so long as everything is well maintained the increased wear should be negligible, end of the day this will increase the engine output beyond factory standard but manufacturers engineer an overhead in order so that they can offer any warranty from new, with increased power output your eating into that margin. But as mentioned before it is in safe realms, after all, the anniversary 20vt came out of factory with 180bhp (AUQ) and this is more or less identical to the AUM engine as found on the 150bhp variant.

Will my insurance company need to be notified?
You should notify your insurance company of any modification to your vehicle, failure to do so may result in your insurance policy being void.

Also If you let us Know where in the country you are as this will normally affect who you end up using. And for information purposes, I am in Kent.
You've had all your qusetions answered already, so i'm not going to go over all that.
But price obviously pays a part in things. Most generic maps (which are fine some of the time) come at around £150 upwards depending on who you go to. If you have a map made specificallt for your car then price will normally start from around £180. Then if you want something that is made to take other upgrades into the equasion then it will mean some dyno time to get the best setup and so price can be £???
Then there is another option as in the Dahlback Racing remaps! I am a dealer for them and they are nothing short of FANTASTIC, But they in turn come at a price. If you wanted one of these then you would be best to contact me for best price.

Not to stress engine components etc make sure the remap is smooth and progressive which means no surprise power just a constant push to the seat.
