Hi, seriously considering changing our A6 3.0TDI Quattro for a Q7. We need the extra space due to the kids. THe only real hangs up I have are moving from a car to an SUV, will I get bored with lack of performance but more importantly what is the real world fuel consumption for a Q7. Our A6 hovers around 34-37, Honest John states the average to be around 25mpg for the Q7, is this correct?

Probably around the same but a little less due to more weight but the difference shouldn't be too extreme I would think.

On my 2007 plate Q7 I was getting 30mpg on a long motorway run at respectable speeds - within the limit you understand :) - daily run about average was circa 24mpg - 'lifetime average' over 60k miles was 23.7mpg. I understand that the latest models are much improved - so would go for one of those rather than the older version.

As for performance - much better chipped than not.

I came from a 3.0 TDI Allroad, over 3 yrs had a lifetime average of 32mpg, my current Q7 3.0 TDI has a lifetime Av 26 mpg. The newest with 8 speed box is better, in my weekend test drive had an overall consumption of 29 mpg

Yep - 30mpg at 70mph, much less around town/urban - maybe early 20s.

2.3 tonnes of car, aerodynamics of a house brick, complete with ludicrously over-sized door mirrors that make excellent air brakes... if you do millions of miles, it'll be an issue. (I don't, so it isn't.)

I have two 7-seater 4x4s (don't ask) and curiously both my wife and I find we're actually going more slowly in the Q7 than we think we are. It somehow feels quite quick - which probably helps keep the mpg reasonable.
