Also check our Supporting Companies section for parts suppliers.

The bit you want is called many things - belly pan / splash guard and so on.

It is well documented the pan from a W8 Passat is MUCH cheaper and does the exact same job.

Just out of interest why would a belly pan from a w8 be any cheaper or different than say a TDI one?

No one really knows.

They are identical in everything except, I think, thickness (W8 ones are slightly thicker and have more insulation material) - bizarre but the price difference is impressive.

Postage is the killer though due to the size, but if you go to a dealership you obviously bypass that. Don't let them tell you it wont fit either, it will.

I think that my inner wheel arch trim has a bit of a rattle on corners, one of my reasons for looking for a cover.

Maybe, but what does happen is that the airflow forces the wheel-arch liners into the tyre are they have bit worn away.

I've done the W8 mod on my '99 TDi and it works beautifully. Make sure you get the right fastners:

"CLIP - 4A0 805 163 - black plastic, wheel well, 4 needed
LOCK WASHER - 4A0 805 137A - retaining disks for wheel well pins, 4 (optional)
DOWEL PIN - 4A0 805 121A - black plastic, wheel well, 4 needed
DOWEL PIN - 8D0 805 121 - silver metal, 6x18mm, rear pan, 3 needed
DOWEL PIN - 8D0 805 121B - black metal, 6x20mm, front pan, 2 needed
RUBBER WASHER - 4A0 805 137 - retaining disks for rear dowel pins, 3 needed
10mm self-locking nut with integral washer - front center of belly pan, 1 needed

One of the reasons the belly pans fall off is that techs don't realize that the front "dowel pins" are longer than the back pins, and they get them switched around. The front "dowel pins" (Dzus fasteners) are metal, like the back, but they are painted black to identify them as being different. So in the front of the belly pan, there are two long black 20mm pins holding up the belly pan, and one center silver 18mm pin holding the front bumper assembly. ETKA is exactly backwards on this - it shows the center pin holding up the front of the belly pan, and the two special-length pins holding the front bumper assembly."

I've an 02 passat estate 1.9TDI would this W8 pan fit my car?? as since it was last serviced the garage said it was too far gone to be replaced safely, the noise from the engine is now noticeably louder:( also can you get the clips that secure the thing to the underside of the car too? Thanks.

Hi there, i'm after one of these for my 2001 Passat saloon 1.9TDI PD 130 but VW are asking for a part number. I know there are part numbers for the screws earlier in this post, does anyone know the part number for the W8 belly pan? VW dealership is just saying gimme the part number lol!

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Actually, I think i need the second part of the cover for the gearbox, I been looking around and the W8 bellypan is the normal front one... anyone know if the middle part one can be used as well?

Hi! Yes I know this is an old thread but:
I have a 54 plate TDI that shed it's undertray on the motorway last night.
I had new fasteners on the front tray 4 months ago (sourced from the dealer)and had not touched it since the last (independant garage) service.
Do any of you spares gurus know if the W8 tray will fit my model?
I'll also need the rear (gearbox) cover as this was still attached but pretty trashed.
I'm tempted to leave it off but the noise level is noticeably higher now and I'm a bit concerned about the wheel arch inners flapping around.
Would leaving the trays off affect the MPG?
Cheers........

Replace the tray. It protects the engine from road crud and stone damage etc. as well as providing better airflow. I replaced my '99 B5 TDi tray with the W8 one, you should have no problem at all, especially as the W8 model is the B5.5 like yours.

The dzus fastners are a pain in the butt to put in sometimes, but it's worth having them all there!

Forgot to mention, part number is 3B7 825 235 A

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180742&page=2 shows the W8 vs the old one. Fastner part numbers are in my earlier post.

Right then:
Just got back from my local ******** (Heritage WSM) with a quote for the engine and gearbox covers plus attaching parts. Wait for it:
£280 + vat!
I asked if that was fitted......but, no.
I did manage to get the correct part numbers for the covers:
Engine tray, 3BO 825 235 B (£102)
Gearbox tray, 8DO 863 822 (£133)
Please can anybody point me in the direction of someone holding these parts at a more reasonable cost?
Thanks........

You got the wrong part number for the engine undertray. See my post above. Don't know about the gearbox cover, never had to replace it.

Thanks but:
The part number was straight from the VW parts catalogue.
The parts guy took the vehicle registration and said that was what I needed as the number you gave me had been superceded.
Confused & hacked off......

The part number TornadoTDi gave you is for a W8 Passat undertray.

The parts chap will be trying to tell you to get one for your car, not a W8. The part number you supplied above is for the 4cyl Passat

Have a read back through this thread and you'll see the W8 undertray has, in the past, been cheaper than the "normal" one.

3B7 825 235A was, at the time of posting, the part number for the W8 undertray. If it were to be superseded, the trailing "A" would become a "B" or a "C" and so on.

As I said earlier in this thread, tell them the part you want.

The guy doesn't understand what you're trying to do. I gave you the part number for the W8 undertray which is cheaper than the standard one. He has taken your reg. and just looked up what is available - no wonder there is only one part there.

Ring them up and ask them for a price for the above number. I did that last year and paid ~£45. Price has probably gone up as the sterling is weak against the EUR.

If they don't have that part available there is probably a newer number for the W8.

Hi chaps,

Just to complete, I eventaully got my undertray for the engine and gearbox from a scrap yard for £60 all in. Was a VERY lucky find as its hard to find!

As other members have said, the W8 Bellypan will fit all B5.5 passats. Its stronger but not sure if it has the foam on it?

Here's a link to uk passats forum thread that has all the parts listed for a replacement. Its a shame the gearbox pan doesn't have a cheap alternative...

That's more like it ;)

There's no alternative to the gearbox cover as (as far as I am aware) it's a TDi-only part.

Glad you got it sorted and still have enough cash to buy a beer.

Might be worth a quick look to see if the Skoda Superb TDi gearbox cover is the same and if it's cheaper.

Did the W8 belly pan have the foam on there for noise dampening?

Nope, its not fitted with foam but it does have extra vents and is a cheaper grade plastic/fibreglass reinforced plastic !

Hi Guys,

My engine under cover recently came loose and fell off.

I recovered it and have managed to fasten it back on with mostly tie wraps as all but a couple of the proper fasteners had disappeared.

I have searched on ebay for replacements (as i know VW will charge a fortune for the part numbers above).
Does anyone know if these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DZUS-FAIRING-FASTNERS-SLOTTED-HEAD-X10_W0QQitemZ320355302954QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Mot orcycle_Parts?hash=item320355302954&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1689|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318) will fit???

Appreciate any help you can give.

To be honest I'd go to the dealer, as the cost of these is peanuts, IIRC a couple of pounds for all the required fixings. Ebay is not always the cheapest......
