Igition off; press and hold trip re-set
Still holding; turn ignition on
Release trip re-set
Then turn clock button either way (can't remember exactly but it'll do the job... just turn it both ways).
As to the petrol light it usually means you have about 50 miles.
Hope this helps.

put petrol in it when the light comes on, you dont want to run them on fumes cos it knackers the cat.

ive tryed doing the reset it wont work any ideas????
If you have the old style instrument cluster with no 'Driver Infomation System'/trip computer, you can not use the 'push/pull' method.
You have to use vag-com or similar.

You might find the procedure in the handbook.
It was for my wife's 2002 A3.

It is tricky and I found it took a few atempts and you got to get it just right, if not by a reset tool to save you the stress;)

I have the full display too. after a little trial and no progress I found that holding both buttons in on the instrument panel (Clock and Trip), finger and thumb job then turning the ignition on cleared it.
