:1zhelp: Hi all.

Does anybody know how I can manually turn up the boost on my car? It's a Golf fitted with the older TD engine, NOT the TDi, so theres none of that electronical gubbins on it. It has whats called a mechanical fuel pump on it. I know theres not much point on doing it becasue it's really slow anyway, but I just want to have a bit of fun.

If anyone could help then that would be cool,

Many thanks

Alun

Might prove useful. ;) I believe there is a bleedvalve you can install on the vacuum pipework from the turbo. :) Not sure 100% how it works as mine's a newer TDI and all boost etc is electronically controlled.

Cool. How much do these bleed valves cost? Are they difficult to fit? I was just hoping for a big red twisty button on the turbo which said + or - !!!!:D

I wish it were that easy. My boost is all controlled by the remap, and below its maximum of 30+ PSI, the only boost control I have is with my right foot. ;)

My car has got about as much boost as a deflated baloon. I might see if I can fit a turbo off a Scania, if only!!!!

I'll try contacting a diesel specialist and see what they have to say :D

Try playing with the wastegate on the turbo charger - I had a renault 11 turbo (petrol) with a Garret T2 turbocharger - All I did was slightly tighten the wastegate spring with an adjustable spanner (This means more pressure is required to open it so it will boost at a higher pressure) - took 5 minutes and power went from 105bhp to 123bhp running safely! not bad! Be warned though, Don't go crazy as could potenially damage either the turbo charger or the engine - e.g. blow the head gasket or something similar, also when upping boost pressures in anyway shape or form it sometimes a good idea to check timing and fuelling on the engine. One other thing to watch out for if tweaking turbos is the over boost sensor - most turbo cars have these (even many old ones). If boost is upped this sensor may either need adjusting or removing as it may not like the increased boost pressure and keep cutting the power. Also, the higher pressure sometimes creates a bit more turbo lag.

Have a go as it costs nothing but be very careful and don't go crazy- I would recommend getting a decent mechanic's advice first before attempting if you are unsure.

Hi there I would suggest NOT touching anything on the turbo as damage can occur. What engine is fitted, isi t the early 110 bhp GT TDI engine or the 90 bhp one ?

Hi. The engine in it is the really early 1.9 TD. Not the TDi. It's a '94 Golf with the 75bhp engine. I'm just after a bit more poke 'cos it's really slow.

However, I have raced my brother in his Mondeo TDCi 130 bhp, and up to 40mph it was equal. Thats only because I got a good start. After 40mph I got left eating deisel fumes.

I'd just want it to be able to keep up with modern day cars. I'm thinking of upgrading my car to the later 90bhp TDi ('95 on). Do you know if it's possible to fit a tuning box to them?

Also, I thought the GT TDi engines were 115bhp, 130bhp and 150bhp?

before you start messing with fueling and boost 1. first of all fit a boost guage, this is ESSENTIAL.standard you should be running in and around 12/14 psi 2.the next stage would be to adjust your fueling first, this is trial and error,it depends on how much black smoke you can put up with (or the cars behind you can) 3.then set your waste gate,(shorten it by screwing in)DO NOT SET THIS ON ITS OWN WITHOUT UPPING THE FUEL. its upto you if you want to adjust. off the top of my head 1/4 of a turn is roughly 1psi.you are safe running around 16/18 psi.DONT GO ANY HIGHER UNLESS YOU HAVE A LARGER INTERCOOLER AND YOU ARE CERTAIN YOUR HEADGASKET IS GOOD,as stated on another reply, you will have probs.you will see a DRAMATIC increase with just upping the fuel delivery on its own:D :D ,ive tinkered with a few peugeot/citroen 90bhp tdiesels and they are running approx 110 bhp.its all trial and error as ive said ,but as above YOU MUST FIT A BOOST GUAGE TO START OFF WITH.if ya need any more info give me a shout:beerchug:
