Had the A4 in today for servive at Audi independant dealer (very good) asked them to take a listen to the chain driven oil pump. On collection they said it sounds noisy , and I should think about changing the whole pump/balance shaft module, as when it fails it could cause further damage ie turbo if not caught early.

1. would you pay up and get pump module fitted

2. Trade it in before the chain snaps

3. drive it until the chain snaps

Audi should be contributing towards this mammoth bill , its a disgrace never again:zx11:

Thanx

It all depends in your circumstances, are you keeping the car and running it into the ground?
Does it owe you any money etc?
Could you afford to put a bew engine in if it did fail?
I changed mine but opted for the modified gear and kept the chain. My outlook was if it lasted 60k before, then even if it does half that again it will outlast the time i will own it.

£400 for parts, fitted myself. Sounds sweet as a nut now.

Hi Jonesy

What do you mean modified Gear option? Is there a guide/topic about this somewhere?

What part's are needed and how much do you think labour would cost?

Check these guys out

http://www.powermaxengineering.com/

Next day delivery from ireland. You don't get away from the chain but they supply all new parts including a modified gear.

Seen people quoting anything from 6-10 hours labour. So whatever the garage charges for the labour really.

I have fitted the above kit and it works a treat. Very knpwledgable guys too. Worth speaking to them!

My local Audi specialist charges 1800.00 for the full geared replacement fix. Don't know if that includes VAT.
If the Haynes manual is to be believed any work in the sump (of six-speed manuals, anyway) is an engine and gearbox out job.
This also means you can't carry easily out any visual checks on the chain shaft.
I'm up for a challenge but taking the engine and box out at home is too much for me.
So I watch the oil light and keep my fingers crossed.
170,000 miles and counting, at about 2.5K per month.

Knowing what I know now I would never have bought the car with a BLB engine.

I can't vouch for a transversely mounted engine but the longitudinal setup definitely doesn't require the engine to come out. I can't see that the transverse does either?! Maybe somebody else could say otherwise?

Id say the setup i went for would be supplied and fitted for around 1k?!

Thanks Jonesy, I am looking to source funds within the next week and will see what I can comfortably afford for this. Will definitely consider your suggestion. At what mileage did you do your's and what's your current mileage, car history since then?

I don't plan to sell mine anytime soon, especially now that I am plunging so much more money in to it, I want to make it worthwhile, so going with your suggestion I wan't the car to last at least to 200k with it being 134k atm.

Mine was done at 60k. Can't really give you an idea as to how long it will last as mines only done 2k since fitting. The gear which you will need to replace was very worn on mine.
