SEAT has opened an important new Prototype Development Centre (PDC) within its Martorell production facility, providing work for 300 engineers from both the technological centre and process engineering area.
The exciting new facility further emphasises SEAT's ability to design and develop new models within Spain.
The recent official opening ceremony was attended by Josep Huguet, Catalan government minister for Innovation, Universities and Corporations, accompanied by local mayors, and SEAT Vice Presidents Frank Bekemeier (Research & Development), Ramón Paredes (Human Resources) and Wolfram Thomas (Production), among others.
Regarded as one of Spanish industry's most innovative centres, and one of the most emblematic within the Volkswagen Group, the PDC is the true 'technological heart' of SEAT. For the first time it brings together all activities related to prototype development in both virtual and physical stages, thus providing substantial savings and shorter ramp-up times to launch new models. Demonstrating SEAT's commitment, 10 million euros have been invested in building and equipping the facility.
SEAT's 17,000 m2 PDC brings together in one unit many facets of prototype development, including virtual vehicles, data control models, pre-production vehicles, standard car assembly capability, productivity analysis and improvement, and digitisation of manufacturing processes.
Ramón Paredes, Vice-President for Human Resources, said 'This ceremony aims to show SEAT's clear determination and commitment to innovation and development as a driving force in providing highly qualified jobs in Spain and Catalonia, as well as the importance of excellence in innovation for the development of future models with high technological added value for international markets'.
