2.0 TDI Jetta-57 Reg

I have been looking around and thinking about getting an engine remap/plug in remap. Are they worth the money and are the benefits aparrent? increased mpg etc? If so can anyone reccomend a unit to buy? I would prefer plug in as can't afford to pay top whack for a professional tune up.

I am off to 'Protune' on April 28th for my re-map, mainly to get my manual version 3TDi ECU put into 'sport' mode ( a smple press of a button on the auto) to improve the present sloppy and non linear throttle response. Also been told to expect a 10% mpg improvement if used sensibly. Cost is reasonable, unlike the excessive prices of the likes of REVO.

Heard mixed reviews about remaps. In theory, I really want to have my 1.9TDI Jetta done because of the power gains and supposed improvements in mpg, however I'm just not convinced a remap won't adversely affect the longevity of the engine and it's components, so I've decided to leave well enough alone. VW set the car up the way it is for a reason, and none of the remapping companies really give any proper 'science' behind what their products do to a car. They all just have nice looking websites that claim big power, torque and economy gains, but no info about clutch wear, or, in the case of the BXE engine (on my car), who scientifically tested that an increase upto 140bhp is reliable and safe on this engine?? Was this figure just plucked out of the air?

A remap gives a car more power, but then everyone says if you actually use the extra power you will wear out your engine and items like clutch, driveshafts etc much faster. Also, a remap is supposed to give a car better mpg, but again, everyone says that if you use the extra power of a remap, you actually get worse mpg.......so.....what's the point in a remap unless you're seriously into modifying cars, or are prepared to risk having expensive bills to correct accelerated post remap damage/wear to engine and components.

I have had my previous TDi's done without ANY adverse problems. HAd my 1.9 done at 68K miles and 7 years on and at 156k its still going strong with no additional smoke etc.
Most re-maps do not take the car over it's design limits (VW AUdi still generally over engineer the engines by a big margin unlike some other makes...) Even my old coupe quattro is still running fine with its now 160K engine that has had a bigger than normal hike from 220bhp to 295bhp....

Well Spent 3 hours at 'Protune' yesterday with the Avant and got myself a 'custom map' for just £196 (club day rate).
Surprised no-one else came along as this is not some cowboy outfit and is not like the generic offerings from the likes of REVO for double the cost. This was customised to my requirements which was :-much better throttle response, more linear throttle, better mpg, removal of all the EGR software garbage and did I mention better mpg.
Well I got all that and he also altered the performance limiters for a mild 10-15% performance hike too.
The result is I can pull out of junctions now without the engine both bogging down or taking 2 sec to come on boost, so much safer to drive.
As to mpg, on the way up to Blackpool I was fairly careful and kept the cruise on as much as possible and averaged 34.8mpg keeping to 80mph.
On way back I set the cruise to 85mph, enjoyed a fair few short sprints to 100mph and back a few times and still managed 38.1mpg. Performance feels pretty similar though the stopwatch tells me 3rd gear 40-60 is now around 0.5 secs quicker. So a win win result for me.
